BOSE Volume Question

Just purchased an '03 Maxima 6 speed to finally replace my '92 (Which is for sale by the way ). Got a lot of help from the 3rd gen board and see a lot useful help flowing on this board too.

My question is regarding the BOSE stero volume (I have the Nav system with a CD changer in the trunk). Max volume on this is "adequate" but I'm used to being able to blast beyond comfortable then dialing back. I also note that the max volume number on the display is 31. This seems an odd number. Is there something wrong with the stereo or is there some limiter setting I can't find in the owner's manual?

As I noted the volume is adequate and does not seem strained or distorted at max volume but it seems strange that I'm running the stereo at "10" all the time.

The one on my 2000 is fine, VERY loud. I have never even turned it up all the way. It does bug me because there is not a "readout" of the volume. It does not say the volume anywhere on the display.

i had a 93 MAx with the BOSE and eventhough it was louder the sound and bass wasnt even close to what the BOSE on my 2k2 produces, i am very happy with mine,

also i suspect that the reason for the 5 gen Bose not being as loud is because the rear speakers are in the doors and not in the rear deck where the sub is

yeah...lately i feel the bose really sucks, i dont remember getting to full volume when it was new, but not i blast it all the way and i still feel its not loud at all.

what's wrong?

it looks like it has a self safe mechanic feature that doesnt let you blow the speakers really loud so they'll last longer

Now that you mention it they may be babying the speakers after all. I still have my '92 SE with BOSE and it is louder than my '03 but I did have to repair one of the rear speakers which had started to buzz. Had to bring it back to the dealer who then shipped it back to BOSE. $200+ later it was good as new.

JT,

The display does show volume when you adjust it and for a few seconds later. That's where I started this thread thinking that "31" for volume was an unusual top end number. I guess marketing folks think this means the system is 3.1 times louder than one with a max of "10".

Wasn't it Spinal Tap who bragged about their amplifier which would go to "11".

The "Premium" Bose in my 03 GLE also sucks - inadequate highs and muddy low bass. My 97 GLE's Bose (also 200 Watts) sounds much better, although it does not have the convenient steering wheel remote controls and the CD-changer.

I complained to Bose (by email) and was told they have not heard of any other complaints -- liar. When I asked if I can have another Bose upgrade or switch to an aftermarket, they told me there are no available upgrades and any aftermarket mod. will void the warranty -- rats.

BTW, how do you insert the smilies (graphics) into the text.

Re: BOSE Volume Question

its not so much that the system is quiet. Its that the system diesnt play as much treble as it used to. So it seems quieter because the tweeters arent makin ur ears bleed. Also, SCV could be on......

I just got a 2000 Maxima as a hand-me-down from my Dad, and found this forum when looking for reasons why the volume is so low. My stereo doesn't display the volume. I've heard that it's them babying the speakers so that you can't ruin them and get them replaced. Friend of mine suggests there might be a code to undo the volume lock, anyone know anything about this?

the amp is not enough, 200w is too low for a 6 speaker system
you will hear distortion when you hit 20, so 31 is just pointless.

The only reason to keep a crappy Bose head unit is if you still listen to CDs and use the CD changer. If you have and Ipod or satellite radio, just get it over with and buy yourself an aftermarket head unit...

even if I only listen to CD, I would change it cuz the cd-changer sucks in cold weather.

I'm using the existing head unit in my 00 with a cassette adapter with good results. It would be nice to be able to plug into an AUX jack, but I can't see a way to justify the cost of a new head unit. What are the price ranges on new head units anyway? Any recommendations for readers of this thread?

Why are you guys complaining about the Bose HU? For a stock unit it's great, even tho it doesn't go that loud... btw the bass is really good(for stock).

gee, why people judge how loud a stereo is by how big the number is?

All you have to do is replace the stock head unit. Its a night and day difference. I can crank my system with my Pioneer AVIC D3 and get no distortion. Aftermarket HU really brings the Bose system to life.

I have an 02 w/ bose... it actually is pretty decent and goes really loud if it's with radio or CDs... The only time I've noticed it isn't loud is if I used an FM transmitter... (that was before I did the Bose cut-out fix) I've also added an Infinity basslink which makes a world of difference and adds any bass the Bose system was lacking. (not too much as to be obnoxious though) I think it's great now.
But yeah, if it's not working right, just get an aftermarket one
