Can this be?

Yesterday I was cruising up Hwy 83N towards Grayslake... stopped at a stoplight and a guy in an M5 was staring me down. The light turned green and I slammed it... I heard him screaming as he started shifting... but I was at least a nose ahead... and then I saw a Sheriff... and laid off quickly (we were doing about 45 and that was the speed limit). The M5 kept going (probably thought he'd won) and I kept looking back for the Sheriff... but we were lucky.

Now, really... I couldn't believe it, but with God and my g/f as a witness... I really was ahead of this M5.

!!!

Yea, but if you kept going a little longer, you would not have been ahead anymore.

I was in an M5 when a GTP pulled next to us on the highway at about 65 mph, and kept jerking forward to start a race, my friend and I were like WTF? And it was on, I watched as the GTP faded away in the distance until we hit 120mph which was like in 4 secs. M5 are beasts.

It could have been an M3, but I remember the red and blue lines near the "M" on the back... ??

the M badge has the red and blue lines, he could have been scrambling for traction, I took a Z06 out from the start till about 35mph then he was gone nothing but tail lights, he told me his 1st gear lost it so he went to 2nd and it still lost it and I was ahead of him then until he caught grip.

Yeah, well, traction loss or not... up to 60mph, it would have been a rather fair kill for me... too bad the Sheriff showed...

M3, M5.... All the same result... (most) of our asses is grass. No way to keep up with the M3, 333HP or the M5, 390-400HP (depending on who you read).

I had a cool M5 in front on the highway of me a while back. Doing 80-90, the last of the left lane lovers got out of the way, and all I saw was the M5 getting smaller and smaller in front of me.

Do you need a car like that, no. Do you want a car like that? OOOHHH Yeeaaaahhh!!!

a series of things could have happened. (traction loss, missed gear, fishing for gear, not really trying) you have a great car, i am sure, but even with boost you are going to be struggling to stick with an M5

you're assuming it was a NEW car. i have a feeling it was a mid-90s 4-door M3. i dont know why. just a hunch. the story is much more realistic that way.

I did the same in the Orlando area, my friend frank was in the car with me. We were on the way to get PIAA's for my 03 SE. I did the same thing. Had him by a nose to like 50, then he began to pull and run away. The reason why we can do it is the retarded clutch setup they have on the M5. U gotta be a pro to get that 4.9 sec to 60. Otherwise one of two things happens; 1) bog the motor and lose time 2) spin the hell outta the tires and lose time. If u dont launch it perfect, u wont get a good 0-60. This is why my father got an E55

the m5 is easily distinuishable by its exhaust note...one of a kind. rumbling, yet refined

Yeah, they have the quad tips like our new 04's. Another identifer would be the extremely wide rear tires along with the fenders flaring out to wrap them. Ya those things do move pretty damn well

I just saw an M3 at Woodfield today... so I can confirm that it was an M5. It was definitely not new, but it was fun anyway...

M5's are only 4 doors, while M3's are only 2. Easy way to tell em apart, even though I can't really imagibe mistaking a 3-series for a 5-series.

It was, as stated, definitely an M5. Older model, but an M5... not a 'badged fake'... it had the wheel flares, etc.

this is not true. there are 4 door M3s. late-90s models were available with 4 doors.
