Break-in period - fact or fiction?

I have heard that the first 500 miles on any car should be used to break it in - not going over 65 on the freeway, no mods, no WOP, nothing that causes too much stress on the engine. And I also heard that it's complete BS. Which is true for the Max, and if the period is required, how long should I do it for (although I have pushed it a little bit already).

Thanks.

I had it done for 1,000 mile going 60mph on the highway all the time.

the manual recommends us to "break in" the vechicle, so i'd listen to it. When I first got mine with 200 miles I raced a Jaguar I beat it of course, I took the car to the track at 1,500 miles ran 14.7 bare bones stock. GLE trim! Who knows how my engine will run in the long run... I have over 30,000 miles now; it runs fine, just some MAF issues but who hasnt had issues.
