Misconception: Renault owns Nissan

Fact: Renault owns 44% of Nissan stock (or so it was just a few months ago)
Fact: 50.1% ownage is required to have controlling interest in a company.

Therefore Renault still does not totally own Nissan. Nissan actually owns roughly 15% of Renault.
GM used to own stock in Lotus and Volvo.

Ford had controlling interest in Ferrari in the 60's. The bitter buyback of the company by Enzo Ferrari left Ford with a big enough chip on it's shoulder to spare no expense to build the GT40 and beat/dominate Ferrari at Lemans in it's second and third year.

 

...and Nissan owns Datsun

 

Datsun was an American market brand name used by Nissan until 1984 when it was just called Nissan Motor Company as it has been since the late 30's (which was actually it's 3rd or 4th name).
