O2 Sensor gone bad. Will it matter if it is not replaced?

Hey Guys,

My service engine light came on today and I took my car to Autozone for them to determine the code. It was a p0132 I believe and the guy said it was an O2 sensor. He then said that he could "erase" the code from the computer so that the light would stay off. I allowed him to do it. Now for my questions:

1st is it legal to delete the code from the computer ?

Will a bad O2 sensor have a negtive effects on the car's performace or ability to pass emissions the next time I need to have it inspected?

Thanks

I think if you have a Service Engine Soon light on you wont pass emissions. I've had mine on for 37,000 miles or so

Yes it will matter.

Both of mine went out and had them replaced. I noticed after about a month of driving with them bad the car was losing power. At first the car ran strong but after a while it got slower. The o2 sensors were sending back a lower and lower voltage signal as the time went by.

Got them replaced and presto! the power is back again!

when o2's go bad the car sets itself on a "safe" mode so it won't run too lean. You'll run rich if anything losing gas mileage and performance but the car will be fine. Mine were out for a few months and i just lost power.
