96 Maxima SE 5-speed vs 2003 Maxima SE auto

Last night I was coming home from a friends house. As I was driving on Valley Road(2 Lane Road) riding on the left lane I notice an older Maxima closing in on me and then passing me on my right. I was like **** this ****, so I just started getting on him when we hit a red light. While we were stop this kid was revving his engine, he definitely had intake (I think it was a Stillen, because it sounded like my old one(98 Maxima).) Anyway the Light turns green and let me tell you that was one of the best launches I had from start. I had him the whole time, by the time I hit 85 mph at which point I decided to shut it down I had about 3 cars on him, I gave him the hazards and we went our seperate ways.

Im guessin he just floored it. Best way to lauch and auto that I know of is hold the brake, give it wot and let up off the brake. Then again the 3.5 is gonna smoke the hell out of those tires so

96, 5 speed with mods (intake + exhaust) can do low 6's. I guess you got lucky.

Not really. The 2k2 Auto is capible of low 6's stock. The kid probubly got a crappy launch too. Legit kill, though nothing to be especially proud of.

Uh...you're kidding. That launch method with Potenzas means you'd probably still be there 6 seconds later when the '96 is closing on 60 mph...

Best launch method description I've seen (and tried) was basically:

Foot on brake
Hold 1,200 rpm
Light turns green, gently but quickly (minimizing wheelspin) push the throttle down

I've also noticed lately that if the road surface isn't that great, even once hooked up the tires will start to squeal again around 5k rpm at WOT - but, not enough to let off.

Well mine is a 3.0 and that was the best launch for mine, but I dont have the extra hp and tq the 3.5 pushes so I dont smoke my tires even if I give it wot off the line. I just get a little squirm and it goes, the 60ft however on mine has been no better then 2.3

I agree. Just make sure you have both hands on the steering wheel. The torque on 2k3 is so huge that the torque steer will make you spin left and right.

i didnt realize the tq is that weak in the 2k-2k1. when i have my psi at 33 and the weather is in the 60's, if i do that same launch my tires will be screaming all the way through 1st.

That's exactly how launched my Max, the kid in the 96 didn't have a bad launch himself but I guess the 246 torque really kicks in.
