Has anyone experienced delayed shifting going from D1 to D2 on their automatics, then, ultimately to Drive?

I had my automatic transmisson starting in D1. I had OD off. I floored it from a stand-still, and shifted into D2. There was a couple of seconds delay before D2 kicked in. I was just at 5000 RPM and was expecting the rev limiter to kick in any second since the engine was racing, and I thought it would go past 5000 RPM. Then, the transmission engaged and went into the second gear. I then proceeded to shift to "D" and that transion was more quick.

I had my TCM replaced some time ago, but I thought that would fix delays in "drive" between the 1st gear and 2nd gear shift, totally seperate from D1 and D2 on the gear selector lever.

Could the D1 an D2 shift be another problem or is this ordinary?

PS: I don't want to hear anything about a VB mod.

Yes, I also get that delay when I manually shift it at 6100... it doesn't engage until 6500-ish.

BTW, get the VB instead.

1-2 shifts are usually slower than 2-3 or 3-4 shifts. It is suppost to soften the shift. Its normal. Well, it should be normal because you have a new TCM. Like Kev said, shift at 6,100rpm, the car will not go into second until 6,500-6,550 rpm's.

That's the only way we can shift close to redline and use the full 222.

It's normal to experience a delay between the actual hand-shift and the transmission shifting. Thats why you should manually shift up at 6100 rpm or so. That way, the transmission will shift at or close to redline. If you shift too close to redline, you may hit the rev limiter.

This is different then all the previous generations of Maximas'. Since the 2000+ has a higher peak HP, past where the transmission shifts automatically, you need to shift it to take advantage of it. (If you are racing). The problem is that the 5th gen auto tranny cannot take any abuse. (IMHO). So it's a Catch 22. If you want to race a 5th gen Maxima, better get the 5 speed. Why couldn't Nissan have a good transmssion, like the Tiptronic?

Yeah, I thought that wasnt to good on the tranny. You cant use the full 222 if the cars broke.

The VB is the valve body. Every auto tranny will have one.

Do a search (link located at upper right corner of page) and use "vb" or "valvebody" as your keyword.
