Brake Upgrades

Hello to all. I am interested in getting stainless-steel brake lines and new slotted rotors. Can anyone direct me to the best place? Has anyone done this to there 2000 Maxima SE? I am also considering a cold air intake. Thank you.[B]

Hope this helps,

What about for a 2K2 max...

I think my front rotors are warped, I get a vibe in the steering wheel when braking @50+mph....The general consensus seems to be that this is attributed to warped rotors...But cutting or replacing seems to solve the problem temporarily...

So, aftermarket rotors seems to be the way to go...What about the pads, can unevenly worn pads cause the vibe?

I'm gonn a try to get the dealership to cut them for me under the 36k b-to-b warranty...if not then aftermarket it is....

What is the mileage on your car now? If it is >5k I'd buy set of good pads and left rotors alone. The vibration should go away by itself with new pads. The reason for that vibration is uneven buildup on the rotor surface. Good pads take care of that after couple days of driving. I'm a fan of R4S pads for now, .org members have ongoing deal with Portefields. There're also other brands but I don't have personal experience with them. "Warped" rotor consept is easier to understand but it doesn't hold measurements, I tried. Mine were close to perfect and vibrating like hell at the same time. You can replace pads yourself (only front ones) or in any garage nearby, dealer doesn't have to be involved.
OTOH, if your mileage is <5k I'd ask dealer to look at the brakes, something else is wrong.

I've got 18+K on the car....the problem first started about two months ago, when I had a patch put on the tire. The tire was re-balanced, and the vibe still comes through the column....maybe the tire is still unbalanced???..or lug-nut torqing was done correctly, the guy at the flat-fixed shop didn't tighten them in the "star" fashion....

I'll go cheap first:
(1)take it to nissan an fish around for a resurface.
(2)get aftermarket pads.
(3)get some good rotors.

Incidently, I have briefly looked at getting some Brembo rotors for a 2K2, I couldn't find any...are the Brembos available by themselves (front pair)?

Any other mfg that I should look at buy?

You said it is happenning while you're braking from 50+, right? If it is the case and you don't feel vibration just driving at that speed then it is definetely your brakes. If you feel it while driving - then it is unbalanced wheel(s). Quite often dealers like to charge for resurfacing insisting that it should be done "on the car" using special equipment. BS. Funniest part is that new rotors cost about the same as resurfacing in dealer's style. Anyway, I'd start from item (2) in your list since resurfacing does remove buildup leaving the cause in place. That explains why people have this problem again and again. One more story - friend of mine was experiencing the same problem on his WRX. At that time he also needed to change pads as well since there was not much left. He just replaced the pads without much thinking about it and the problem was gone. That particular case convinced me the most. Good luck with any way you choose.

Thanks, I've been keeping up with some of your other post...I'll get some aftermarket pads and see if the problem is less. If not then I'll check with Nissan...If I do decide to get rotors, can i swap them myself?

*Cheap* Wilwood kits

Unless this is just some ultra scam, this company seems to have the best prices on complete kits for the Maxima :

http://www.precisionbrakes.com/maxima.html

Frankencom.com has a deal on an entire kit.

Yes, it's easy enough to do. There's writeup somwhere on .org if you really need help. Takes 5 lug nuts + 1 or 2 nuts on caliper. Just remember not to step on your brake pedal when your brakes are disassembled.
