Automatic tranny question
Automatic tranny question
This is my first automatic car, always had manuals before.
I am wondering if it is possible to accidently, manually downshift the car into a lower gear when the revs for that gear are above redline? Lets assume I'm driving 90 mph in D and I wanted to shift to 2. Is this possible or is there a locking mechanism that prevents me from doing so? Is it possible to shift to 1 at speeds higher than 40 mph when I'm pressing the button in? I don't want to try it out and find out the hard (expensive) way.
Thanks in advance for your replies.

When I rented a Misubitshi Spyder it had sport shift. And they had the gears locked so you couldn't downshift to a certain gear if you were at a certain speed. I'm sure nissan did the same thing. But who knows

No can do. You can physically move the shifter to a lower gear, but the computer will not allow the trans to downshift unless you are in the specified "safe" range.

I accidentally downshifted to 2nd when I was trying to get 3rd and I was going about 75... It moved the stick into the 2 position, but it just didn't downshift until I slowed down...
