Did big burnout....now auto trans stuck in 2nd gear....help
It was a rainy day and I go to drop off my friend at his house and his driveway is very steep (and wet) so I come to a stop and hammer the gas...I know Im an a$$hole...I proceed to spin all the way through 1st then stop and try to get up the hill and cant. So there's smoke everywhere (stock 17" potenzas dont worry) and smoke coming through my air vents so I I stop the tires put the car in park, pull the e-brake, and get out. We had a little laugh at the tiremarks I made and I checked to see how much I wore my tires down because I have never done such a big burnout before in my life!!! So I get back in my car to leave after it aired out a little...put the car in neutral to coast down the driveway but when I drive away I notice that the car is not shifting and lags a lot off the line...it's stuck in 2nd gear!!! I pull over and turn the car off. Start it back up to find that the o/d light is blinking but shuts off after I turn o/d off then on again. So I turn the car off again then on and there is no blinking lights whatsoever...I drive home and everything is fine...shifts like new. I do not beat on my max this was a one time thing. Did I screw anything up with my tranny or anything else??? How badly are my tires f'd up??? they don't seem too bad. Sorry for the long post..any help is appreciated..BTW I have a 2000 SE auto with 13k.

Was probably the fuel-cut or tranny limp-mode??? It should reset itself (which it sounds like it did), or else disconnect the battery for awhile. I wouldn't worry about it...just don't make it habit if you want your tranny to live long and prosper.

Check out your owner's manual under "starting and driving", "accelerator downshift".... "if the vehicle is driven under extreme conditions, such as excessive wheel spinning and subsequent hard braking, the fail-safe system may be activated. This will occur even if all electrical circuits are functioning properly. In this case, turn the ignition key off for three seconds, then back to the ON Position. The vehicle should return to its normal operating condition.........."
If your car is shifting as it did before your burn-out, it's fine, though aged a little
BTW... that was from my 2003 manual, maybe it's not specifically spelled out in your 2000 manual...

Thanks for all the responses...my car feels like it's in good shape so far. I did inquire about the TSB but i was told that it does involve my 2k and that it was only the early 2ks. Should I have the dealership look at anything else that could be potentially wrong with my tranny???
