faster to manual shift or just leave in drive? (AUTO)

Just to clarify...putting it in 3 basically limits it to 3rd gear correct? So it will shift normally through 1-2-3 but never go into overdrive right? My buddy auto-shifts his 99 Maxima all the time and I'll say this, it's ALOT faster off the line that way. Granted, it's probably bad for the car like NT2SHBBY said but it feels alot faster.

The auto shifting isnt bad for the tranny, if done properly that is. Just like double clutching a manual, if you mess up, it isnt good for the tranny. So long as you shift the tranny before the rev limiter, you should be ok. BTW: my car was .2 sec faster to 60 when done manually according to my Gtech. (6.6->6.4) It also depends on the year of your max. the 2k2/3's make better times w/ manual shifting. My old 01 didnt make a difference at all.....

based on the dyno's i've seen, the engine makes close to peak HP up at redline, so allowing the engine to rev all the way up to the redline, rather than shift at around 6000 or so with it in "D," means that when we do shift to 2nd, the RPMs are higher up, meaning more HP is available. this sound about right?

Manual shifting puts you higher in the rpm range than leaving it in drive. Thats why the car is faster when manually shifting. The power actaully starts to go down at 6100-6200 but if you shift then you will land the next gear at a lower rpm which means more lag. Understood
