Blow off Valve question

Hi all,

Im curious, are Blow Off Valves recommended for Turbocharged cars only, or can they be used with stock engine (w/ an intake mod) too?

Thanks.

I had a friend you had one on a jetta that just had CAI. I thought it was really stupid since there insn't any forced inducted pressure so BOV are pointless on stock cars.

On our Max's you only need them on sc'd or turbo'd cars.. It's used to release excess pressure so that it doesn't mess up the blower by backdrafting.

Actually it did when he shifted gears since it was a standard. I didn't hear it when we were riding around, but when he backed up and switched gears you could hear is pshhhhh. It was such a small sound it probably couldn't be heard going down the road. BTW he had an Injen.

You ******* ricers. Why the **** would you need a blow off valve if you don't have a turbo?

BTW, i think your friend is lying. All injen's SHH... It doesn't just happen when you change gears, it happens when you just give it a touch of gas, or enough gas so that when its interupted u will notice the sound over the engine noise. Some guy said it on ohere, it sounds like air sucking out of a straw. Real BOVS make like a sneeze sound aCHOO like that. hahaha

No he had a BOV saw it with my own two eyes. Well I think it was an injen. In reality the guy isn't my friend, but I didn't know what to call him. I can't stand the guy, but my other friends like him so be it. And I don't exactly remember when it made the SHH sound. I just remember hearing it when he was backing out of the driveway.

The 1.8T motor usually does NOT have a blowoff valve installed. The car will run rich as hell, go search on www.vwvortex.com for more info on this.

I'm not sure for SCed cars, but for a turbo, BOVs are used to help minimize turbo stall during a shift. If you close the throttle to ****, the throttle plate will cause a pressure wave to head back to the turbo and will stall it. The BOV vent the pressure so the turbo can keep up to speed in between shifts.

A BOV works when vacuum hits the top side of the diaphram and there is boost on the bottom side.

I know the BOV on my Talon TSi has a port on the bottom side (intake side) and the boost signal is part of what makes it work.

So in a N/A car, I'm not so sure it would work the same way that it does in a turbo. The BOV may actually open when it's not supposed to or vise versa, making the car run like **** since the vent would be pulling in air that didn't go through the MAF and get counted by the ECU.

Normally, you vent them back to intake behind the MAF since this is counted air. For an N/A car, there would obviously be no venting since there is no boost, but you still might get a woosh sound since there would be high vaccum in the intake when it opens. But that would make the car run like $hit since this would be "un-counted" air making its way into the intake. You could try hooking the vent on the other side of the MAF, but that would muffle the sound a lot.
I'm assuming you already knew there would be absolutely no perfomrance gain, in fact, it would probably hurt performace. People that do this in a N/A car are doing it to pose a turbo.

That all being said, I have to give my humble opinion that someone that tries to sound like something they aren't (i.e. PRETENDS to have a turbo) is completely effing ghey
