Radar Detector Mounting (Location)
Radar Detector Mounting (Location)
Okay guys, I've got one of the new Escort Solo II's on order with the hardwired smart cord coming and want to mount it in my Max. I was hoping some of you would have pics of where you have mounted some of yours. Trying to stay away from suction cup mounting all together if possible. I'm currenty looking at mounting to top of rear view mirror or possiblbly on top of the piece were the clock is located. Only problem I see with that may be a height issue. If some of you have any ideas or pics, please share.
Thanks,
Shane

Its really easy too. Just take off you're sunglass holder (held on by 2 bolts), and then tap the auto dimming rear view mirror wires. The negative is black, the postive has a strip on it. They are the only 2 wires up there. Tap the positive, and for the negative, connect to one of those 2 bolts, and it will now work with you're ignition. This was one of the easiest / best mods I've done, looks very clean.
One potential word of caution, I've read posts from others in the past that state that the tinted strip at the top of the windshield will reduce the sensitivity of radar detectors. I have never tried to verify this but I always place my V1 in the middle of the windshield to maximize the rear radar/laser detection.
Just an FYI...

Well guys, changed my order to the new SR 7. The display should be a little easier to hide now. Got a great deal. So, any good ideas on mounting the display only??

Shane: Mount the SR7 display above your steering column or where I mounted mine.

Hardwiring & Tinting
Hey guys,
Anyone considering hardwiring, make sure you use an inline fuse if the circuit you tap is protected by a higher amp fuse than then the radar detector wiring is rated for. For almost all in car circuits, I can't imagine not needing the inline fuse. I know on my Bell, the hardwire it came with is very small gauge. It was meant to go into the cigarette adapter, which has the inline fuse built in. If you decide to go without that, you risk a fire. It's a small chance, but a chance none-the-less.
I tested the tinting idea with my Bell a while back; this was brought up a while ago here. I have the highest-end Bell, I forget which model. Anyways, on my way home from work, I stopped at a point where i was always picking up a k-band signal @ ~ 24.150 MHz. It was coming from one of those road signs which had a radar gun mounted on.
I pulled off to the shoulder when I first got the detection, and I moved the detector all over the windshield to see if I got varying results. I didn't. Let's not forget that the radar signal will get into the car and bounce around anyways, so the tinting will have negligible effect.

Looks like we have the same BEL detector. I have mine hardwired at the far left of the drivers side visor. What exactly did you velcro it to and where?
