I live in a small town where you don't have access to large parts stores. I'm going to flush my auto and refill with a synthetic but the only place in town that has it has Amsoil in 10qt containers @ $88 or Castrol in 1qt containers @ $7.50. Is Castrol any good? Should I mix the 10 qt Amsoil with 2 of the Castrol? Should I go with all Castrol? Thanks for the help!!

 

this might get moved to the oil forum but i have not heard anything bad about castrol synthetic but i would check bill's recommended fluids just to check. if its not mentioned then add a post in it and maybe someone will have some insight. i used mobil 1 atf in mine and it was only 5 bucks a quart.

 

...Get it online bud. You can get every possible synthetic ATF available for a small shipping charge (Mobil 1 / Royal Purple / Amsoil / Redline / etc.) and that way you have your choice. You will need 12 quarts for the full flush, which is what I did. I bought my own ATF (I went w/ Mobil 1) and took it to my tune n' lube place to fulsh and fill. They have a process that uses the vacuum of the tranny hydraulics to flush all the old fluid simultaneously while bringing in the the fresh synthetic, so just buy the 12 q. of fluid, get it delivered, and take it to 'em... But get 12 quarts of all one brand for consitency, just to be on the safe side.

"Uh...actually the full ATF capacity is 12 quarts, and I have found about 6 to 8 quarts on a drain and fill method that was in my pan. Of course everytime I take the drain pan off so there is a little more.

As far as the DIY flush method you would disconnect the return line from your AT radiator going back to your transmission. This is something you need a friend to help you with. Have your friend start the car. At this point you will see fluid coming out the return line. Fill the tranny as close to the same rate as the fluid coming out the return line. At the same time have your friend shift through all the gears stopping about 20 seconds in each gear. Have your friend keep cycling the tranny like this until you are done. You know you are done when you see clean, fresh fluid coming out the return line.

This is the most effective way to flush your auto tranny at home. Of course you have to be very careful in making sure you don't run the damn thing dry. But other than that it's really easy.

Ah ... just asi thought, backyard mechanics at work.
Just be careful. Is the money you save really worth having to buy a new tranny on your own?
Why don't you just take it to a quick lube place? Or the dealer. That way if it gets screwed up they'll fix it not you.
I'm also sure you are disposing of the used fluid in an environmentally friendly manner.

 

I like to tinker and I have done this before on other cars so I'm pretty comfortable with it. It's pretty easy if you know what your doing, I was a helicopter mechanic/crew chief in the military. I have a local shop that will take the used fluid.
