Mustang GT

My neighbor just bought a new stang gt auto and won't shut his mouth over that pos... I told him I wanna run with him and see what my 03se can do. I'm an auto too but I still think I can keep up with that american piece.... I saw the manual GT's numbers (0-60 in 6.0 and 1/4 in 14.7) so assuming the auto is slower, won't my max fair well with his gt...if not beat it?

SPEEDY6 recently ran his 6-spd 2002 SE against a Mustang GT and embarrassed the crap out of the 'Stang.

Speedy6 ran a 14.4 in the 1/4-mile, and the 'Stang ran a 15.2 in the 1/4-mile.

I would like to see the tape

I loved amarican muscle cars... hate them now
cheap to make big power ... tons of parts available
very expensive to maintain

there were a couple new GT's at the track the other night... saw a bunch of runs by them and was very unimpressed. 14.5 was the lowest i believe, and many of the times went into the low 15's. the ones runnign were all 5 speeds too. i raced a 5 speed GT (2002) in my auto 2k2 and it was almost dead even but i pulled a tad (1 or 2 feet), so an auto GT should be a good kill for you. enjoy! just make sure you launch good... RWD is an advantage.

(Assuming the Stang is a Coupe and not a 'Vert)

It will be a close race, you'll lose from a stop most likely. from a roll, if both your cars downshift into the same gear, it will probubly always be very close. His car is torquier so he will probubly get the jump on you.

5 speed GT's run 14.1's at the worst here in GA. An auto usually .5-.6 seconds slower (but usually more consistent overall). I've driven an '00 GT to 13.8's (13.83 was my best), and my budy John ran a 13.82 the same day with the stock tires (same car). They can be pretty fast or really slow, but it's more dependant on the driver than the car.

15's in a new Stang GT is a BAD driver. A stock 2002 GT will beat a stock 2002 6 speed Max at the track if both cars are driven properly. However ona highway roll it's pretty much dead even.

that's one race between one max and one stang. as someone said, 15's in a GT stang is pretty poor. over the aggregate, the maxima will lose more often than not to a stang (matching transmission, both stock).

ya it is a drivers race. the auto should be a pretty good match, but it is torquey off the line. the kids i raced weren't the best drivers, but thats fine cause i outdrove them and it was fun for the moment. if he had won, thats no problem, as it is supposed to be a sports car!

I love outdriving cars that should beat me. GT's are pretty respectable (except for the few idiots that drive them that think the GT is God's gift to fast cars). Now an '03 Cobra, that's the best car for the money in the entire world IMHO. What else can do what it does for $35~ish large (and is still being produced)?

If he knows how to drive at all it will be close. If you do beat him it will be because he spins too much, which is not hard to do on the crappy goodyears that come on new GT's. Both with good drivers and bone stock the GT should win, but it won't be by a ton. Even with similar mods the GT should win. Just for bench racing purposes I'll give you an example. I have a friend who has a 2001 automatic GT. He has catback, shift kit, and CAI. He runs 13.85 @ 100 mph. That's on stock tires and stock gears. With another $1000 in tires and gear swap he should be mid 13's at ease. I don't think even a 6 speed Maxima could touch that, let alone an automatic.

While driving my minivan some dude in a current gen GT toyed with me a little. As it turned out, we were both heading to Blockbuster Video. So I asked the guy if he ran it (at the track), he told me he did the gear swap (as well as a couple of boltons) and ran a 12.8 second ET so far.

The only time I ran one in my Max, I beat him by a front end over 1/4-1/2mile distance. However, it didnt sound like the guy was to adept @ working a manual tranny.

That said, dont' let stock HP numbers (260 vs 255) fool you, the 4.6L V8 in the Stang GT packs GOBS more torque and with a RWD setup that give it a definite advantage over the 2K2+ Maxima.

Peace.

This is the wrong place to do your research, try www.modulardepot.com, or www.corral.net, to get accurate times. For what it's worth, I think you'll get smoked.

yawn. My dads friend also has a 00 GT convertiable, thinks its the fastest thing on this side of the moon.

I still owe him a run with the 00 Max SE 5spd (my dads car).
atleast he keeps it clean and is really cool.

Havent raced one yet at the track, but I walked one on I287 west
coming off the Tappan Zee Bridge from a roll- and that car had no ***** after 85-90mph- walked him so bad by the time I hit 125mph
both headlights looked like one! And he was definetly racing me- I'd love to race a manual at E-town
with those pretty chrome rims!

Jealousy will get him no where.....I am a part time ricer, but I also need my American Horsepower. I respect all performance cars, especially those that are daily drivers....but above all I don't criticize someone for driving a car I don't like.......

While I agree that comment could have been put differently, I don't think jealousy had anything to do with it.

I know I would NEVER, repeat NEVER buy or drive a late model Corvette...I mean NEVER, even if I could buy 20 of them. They are the quintessential advertisement for a lack of a male sexual organ and some kind of inferiority complex trying to be overcome. Also, with the more recent ones leaning toward more curves, etc. they to me have become chick cars...granted for really fast chicks.

No I am not flaming, nor bashing...just correcting assumptions of jealousy and recounting opinions I have heard many time in many places. Also, note...this is not directed at you personally, just that car in general.

Bottom line...the Corvette was named MOTOR TREND'S CAR OF THE CENTURY!

We all have our opinions, but when a car can run as fast as the vette and still get 20/28 miles per the gallon..you have an all around car.....

I dont understand that rationale. The Vette isnt my favorite car either but I'd love to tryout a late C4 ZR1 or C5. As a car enthusiast (not just Nissan or Maxima), I like any car that can perform. Given the stock level of performance for the money, nothing really outperforms a Corvette.

Peace.

I agree, but if we took that logic to its conclusion, you would be happy with a 'car' stripped of all bodywork, interior materials, etc., etc., etc.

I was talking about the WHOLE package, including appearance, performance, AND stigma. As a WHOLE, I still have no desire.

i plan on buying a late 70's vette when i get out of college. gonna be my project car to restore, tinker with, and just drive on the weekends. chevy is not a bad company at all, much higher up on my list than ford... while i might not buy a new vette, the old ones are classics and i look forward to owning one

On a price level nothing did outperform the Corvette untill the '03 Cobra cam out. Sure the Z06 is slightly quicker in the 1/4 but costs about 20k more.

I had a 89 gt with ~400 to ~500 HP ( depending on what satge i was at)
20,000 into an 8,000 4 year old car makes it FAST and handle like rails
I dunno bout the c5 and newer but my car could out accelerate and out corner a zr1. that was all it could do better but then again a supercharged built 302 in a yugo would do wonders! If i remember correctly my stangs best times were ~12 sec @ ~130 ? i think that is right ... been a lonk time since I've had it.

You all forget that 99% of Mustangs are auto and 90% of those are V6. And 99% of the owners can't drive. The 1% that can drive have probably modified their Mustang GT and will spank you. But those are pretty good odds if you ask me.

As far as Corvettes go: I'd go for a C5 or say an old Stingray. Anything in between is junk.

Not even close......

Mustangs are sold in manuals in a much, much higher percentage than camaro/firebirds or corvettes, not to mention Maxima's.

Yes, there are more V6 Mustang's sold than GT's, but the ratio of manual:automatic is generally 40/60 across the line. Trust me I know. I was looking for a C4 Corvette, and I wanted a 6 speed - nearly impossible to find. Then I wanted a 4th Gen F-body 6 speed - a little more common but still very hard to find. Then I looked at SN95 Mustangs - tons of 5 seed GT's available. I'm not saying it's impossible to find a Vette or Camaro 6 speed, but in my price range and with lower mileage it wasn't gonna happen.
