How to get a car inspected

I was hoping someone might be able to help me. I want to buy a 2000 Maxima SE 5 Speed and I talked to some dealers around my area about getting an inspection done. I'm having doubts though as they all say the same thing. The do a visual inspection and drive the car a little to see if the hear any problems. They charge $85 for this. I know a good bit about cars so I can do this same thing. What I was hoping for is someone to do a more thorough check. Does anybody know of a service like this. I live in Atlanta. Thanks for your time.

Assuming you're buying this from a private seller...

One word of advice

NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEEEEEEEEEEEEEVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR RRRRRRRRR EVER BUY A CAR THAT'S NOT ALREADY INSPECTED

____NEVER_____!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Get the seller to have it inspected and DEMAND that it __PASS__ inspection before you purchase it. NO EXCEPTIONS. NONE WHATSOEVER!

I've been burned by this in the past and my father has as well...
Don't assume that because the car isn't that old that it's guaranteed to pass.

I don't think he's talking about state inspection. Go to a grease monkey garage and ask them what they would charge to give the car a good once over.

ah k, yeah, a good inspection *after* the sale might be doable by a small garage. I'd imagine they'd give it a state inspection-style safety check, and then go further (such as a compression/leakdown test, listen to the engine, check oil pressure, oil analysis, etc.)
