Service Engine Light quick question- please advise

I have a 2001 max and I drove it to school today and the car was fine. Coming back from school i started the car and it threw a SES light. I thought id have it read at an autozone or diagnosed at a nissan dealer tomorrow and drove home. While at home i disconnected the battery and i was playing with the headlight housings and stuff. When i turned the car back on, the SES light was gone. Does this mean theres something wrong with the car and i missed the chance to know what it is and have the SES light read? or does this mean that the SES light was a dud of some sort? I would think if theres something wrong with the car it would throw the SES light again? Any advice is greatly appreciated, im planning some road trips soon so id really like to know what i should do with the car. thank you in advance.

Re: Service Engine Light quick question- please advise

the code is still there. its stored in the ecu's memory. i would just have the code pulled at autozone to make sure its something you cant repair/replace. most likely it will show back up.

If you've never had the ECU reprogrammed then that could be it. They just program the computer to turn the light on at a higher level. If that's it then it will probably go on again but shouldn't hurt the car. If you can pull the code next time then someone can tell you the problem. (Or it could be the infamous 2K coil problem)

he did mention that the car was driving fine so i dismissed both the coils and maf even though the 2k2-3 failures are more prevalent. ill be ms. cleo and call it a oxygen sensor or cat.

Take it to Autozone for diagnostic ... unless you wanna pay the rip off dealer $80 for a job can be done in less than 5 min. As for the SES light it will come back up in a day or two if you try to reset it.

sloppymax = ms. cleo

It was a PO135- O2 sensor, autozone guys think it was due to a hard pothole or moisture because 26,000 miles is too early for a sensor to die. I guess if the code throws again i'll have nissan take a look. Thank you sloppymax, cabernet, and hcn101 for your excellent advice.

26k is too early for a sensor to go. thats why nissan issued a tsb on 2k and 2k1 o2 sensors. the latest tsb i saw covered the furthest towards the muffler o2 sensor. there was a post on it in here a few days ago.

P0135 .. We're on the same boat. I had this like 3 weeks ago. I tried reseting the ECU by unplugging the battery cable but it came back 2-3 days later but you should try it too. 26k ... I suppose yours' still under warranty right? If not call Dave B and let him know it's the Front Sensor Bank1 (in case you didn't know, it's the one near the firewall). I just ordered it from him and it's $110.
I saw it somewhere that if not taken care of it will reduce your mileage.

My ses light came on about a week and half ago. It was P0420 - catalyst below minimum threshold. There's a TSB on it that says the ecu needs to be reprogrammed. I unplugged the batt cable overnight and it's been off for about 4 days. If it comes on again, guess I'll take it to the dealer. But will they reflash it without reading the code? I don't want to pay $80 bucks for them to read it when autozone is free.

If you're absolutely sure that you'll need the ECU to be reprogrammed then just tell them to do it and ask for the price upfront. Mine was manufactured on 09/1999. I had it it reprogrammed while in there because my engine was stalling, I didn't know it was the dirty throttle body ,and they were telling me it was the ECU . After that my car was still stalling like ****. Until somebody told me to try cleaning the throttle body, it's all good now. Those service writers are shady. If they don't want to do it go to different dealer, their loss.

Nope. Mine charged $105 to read the code and it wasn't taken off of the repair. Stay away from Dublin Nissan.

thats insane. the diagnostic fee should be applied to the repair if you choose to do it. i bought my own obd II software and cables just so i dont have to deal with that.

That's exactly what I'm going to do next time the light goes on. $129 at Kragen for Equus 3100 reader.

Yup ... they charged me $90 for reading the code. Another $90 for reprogramming. Total was like $195 after tax. That was at Metro Nissan near Philly airport.

Maybe we should compile a list of ripoff dealer service centers. Dubln Nissan charged $105 to read the code and another $200 to replace one ignition coil.
