car shuts off while driving??

had my 2000 maxima SE six weeks now....zero problems...up until:

scenario 1: two days ago, 40 mph in third gear...take it out of third into neutral and pull into turn only lane, go to make a left across traffic and everything locks up, all lights come on, can't control car at all have to brake, figure out what the **** just happened, then after figuring out the car's off (car's in neutral), turn the key and restart...figured it might be an isolated incident

scenario 2: this morning, again coming out of third gear into temporary neutral for downshift into second as i take a right turn into my office complex, again car shuts off steering freezes etc, this time i recognize and restart on the fly, shift into second and continue to my parking spot

this ****'s scary as hell cuz uhhh, if i'm going across say two lanes of traffic instead of one in scenario one uhh..sitting duck?

i'm sure y'all have heard of this, and i have searched before i asked this questions, maybe my combination of search words were incorrect becuase i never saw a scenario similar to this one in the results

oh, 36,800 miles...thank you for any information in advance, hope it wont cost too much to fix cuz i just blew a grand at custommaxima.com and optauto.com

Same thing happened to my 2000 a while ago...doing about 70, put it in neutral and it cut off. It happened 2 or 3 times, and never happened again. I was befuddled (like my word) when it happened, but since it didn't happen after that, I just let it go.

Exact same thing used to happen to me. Took out MAF and "gently" cleaned it with electrical cleaner spray, let it dry and reinstalled - problem solved.

I have heard the exact same scenario (stalling) on a handful (5 or so) of other 2000 5sp Maximas. Unfortunately the others were not real good about posting once they treated their problems, and thus I do not know of other potential solutions. This one worked for me though. Good luck!

Your MAF sensor is acting up. Try the cleaning idea.

Also check the connections at your battery terminals. Then, trace the negative ground cable to the engine block and check that bolt too. If they are loose, that could cause the car to do that as well.

Is there a write-up available for removing the MAF so that I can clean it? Thanks very much everyone for all of the help!

Another solution:

The harness for my fuel injector was frayed... potentially when the owner before me attempted to install a remote start. I would shut off at like 65mph. Somewhat horrifying. Nissan Service in Warnock (morristown, nj) picked it up running the computer diag. when Bay RIdge (brooklyn) couldnt.
