Quick Extra Horsepwer

Does anyone know how I can squeeze a couple/few extra horses outta my Max for no money at all or at least under $300 that I can do in the driveway. Ive heard that using Premium gasoline adds an extra 10 hp....is this really true?

1. a straight pipe $80 1-3 hp
2. pop charger $119 5-7 hp

The 93 octane can add a few hp over the cheap stuff so long as the ignition timing is there to match. Find a local dealer that will be willing to advance your timing to 17º. And yes this can be done via a consult-II on newer Nissans.

I can free up a bunch of power for free.

Take out your air conditioner, alternator, radio, everything.

Then, remove the intake and just duct tape on a big funnel where it used to be.

Remove the hood, passenger seats, backs seats, and EVERYTHING out of the trunk.

Then get under your car and unbolt everything from the headers back, including the ypipe, cat, bpipe, and muffler.

And say hello to 14's...

now i still don't know why if the tornado sucks major buttcrack, it still gets decent reviews and hasn't been doomed to bankruptcy...

and i get more confused when we wanted to be funny and put a tornado air in a friend's '90 240sx at the track (behind his back) to see what happens... the laugh was on us, he ran .252 faster than the week before and like 1-3mph faster.. weather conditions were nearly identical to the other weekend except wind was not in favor of racers... we took that sucker out while he took a bathroom break and then when he ran again, he ran .3 slower...

For the sake of not giving the Tornado any props, i choose to accept that it was sheer coincidence... but it just bugs me

Matt, the best part of all about your first post, is your not even at work.

Intake, Y-pipe, secret stuff that put the "N" in SR20DEN's name.

i just put my intake in last night.

I think it made it a little faster.

(notice the word "think")

last night, with the A/C off, I could def. tell a differnce (it was about 67 degrees outside)

this morning, with it being about 85 degrees and with my A/C on, I could not tell any difference with my butt dyno.

And I could not really even hear it, with the radio on slightly, and the fan blowing on 2...

I have the Injen and noticed an immediate difference with it. It's an improvement no matter what the temp (109 degrees here this week!)

The fact it's so quiet is why I bought it initially. I can hear it when I step on it no problem. Plus, the whistling is kewl...... That 'growl' gets annoying to me after awhile.........

For 2002-2003 3.5L VQ's, the ESM lists 15 degrees plus or minus 5 degrees BTDC for timing. So you could actually advance it to 20 degrees BTDC and still be within specs...

When I got mine done the most the guy could advance it was 17. Either he did not know what he was doing or that may be the limit.

I did mine myself and the Consult would not allow for adjustment past 17---you can only go 5 degrees of variance (13-17 degrees) with the Consult II from what I have seen. Not sure if you can go higher, but something else would need to be changed prior that would allow the higher advance.

Someone has done a writeup on here as to how the consult could go past 17º. It involved a re learn of the TPS or something. I can't confirm that it has been done. I would have taken mine to 19º if it was easy to do at the time.

Hell... high 13's might even be possible!

Right, I was just saying that it is theroetically possible to get to 20 deg BTDC according to the ESM I have on CD. I'd love to get mine up that far. I'm sure it would help with mileage as well as response/power. Hell, it might even cure the damn power hesitation that some of the 3.5L's have (the 03-023 TSB that's out).

Extra Power

Does anyone know how much that computer chip cost? For extra horsepower?

Picasso,
Keep your tank only about 1/3 full. That alone will save about 50 lbs. Remove spare tire (28 lbs) jack and handle 7 lbs, trunk carpet 12lbs, floor mats 19 lbs.

you have just decreased the mass of your Max by over 3%. This is about the same (give or take a little) as a 7-10 HP increase.

Then I would do a place racing intake and Unorthodox underdrive lightweight crank pulley. Ask for a blem. you will save over 50%

You have a 2003, right?...

Get a Firm Fabrications Midpipe (only) & a K&N RR-3003 filter. It makes my Max insanely quick. It's V-8 loud above 4000RPM.

www.firmfabrications.com

I've also used the BERK intake & midpipe, and the Firm is WAAAAY better. Especially in hot weather. You don't feel a low-end powerloss at all. I would say it gives at least a 12-14HP gain. This is my assumption. The Frankencar has been dynoed around 10-12HP, and this intake is less restrictive, since it eliminates the wire screen & MAF tube.

If your heart desires an exhaust system, check out the GroupDeal threads for OBX cat-back. Not sure about HP, but it's less restrictive than the stock system. You can get one for around $275
