Running on 5 Cylinders?

I took my car to my brothers (5 mile drive) early this morning and it ran fine. When I left I immediately notice that it wasn't running smooth. About a mile down the road my service engine soon light started blinking then went solid... It seems like I'm running on 5 Cylinders. Any advice that you can offer will be much appreciated.

is the car hesistating or having jumpy acceleration? if you have had a coil go bad then that cylinder is not firing so you might be running on 5. when the ses blinks it means that it is urgent that you get it serviced. if it was solid the entire time then i would say it might be an o2 sensor. i would take the car immediately to autozone to have the code pulled or a local mechanic with diagnostic tester. if you go anywhere else but autozone expect to pay for a diagnostic fee if you dont have the repair done.

Thanks for the tips sloppymax. I just called a local mechanic who has been really straight on things with me before. I'll let you know what I find out.

definetely let us know what the outcome is because if you have a problem, chances are plenty of other people have or will have the same issue.

Looks like it's the #4 coil. Will be replaced on Monday hopefully. I'll let you know how it works out.

someone posted some info on autozone parts the other day and they sell a coil for our car made by wells which runs for 49.99. maybe be something to think of as an alternative to nissan parts if you are interested.

Yeah I posted the autozone thing. The same thing happened to me except it was cylinder 2 misfiring all over the place. I'm having all 6 replaced because the TSB recommends it. How many miles does your car have GXEme?

My car only has 105,000 mile on it. Anyone know which cylinder #4 is. The shop that was supposed to fix it today can't find #4 cuz now that the humidity is gone here my car is running fine again.

I'm so irritated right now because I had to drive my car all the way to work this morning on 5 cylinders. My car started acting up about 20 minutes away from my house and because the way things are at my work right now I just kept going. I'll be picking up a coil from the dealership on my way home and putting it in myself tonight. BTW the #4 cylinder is in the middle front of the engine, right?

Bought a coil from the dealer today for $66.00. Put it in when I got home. Anyone know how to reset the ecu without going to the dealer?

You could disconnect the batt for 24 hrs or ignore it. The ecu will clear out the message after the car is started a number of times (or something like that). When I replaced my MAF the light went off after about a week & a half. Here's the explaination, linky. Scroll down to the part that says What is a MIL(aka. Check Engine Light) and how do I RESET it?

Thanks for the reply Pir8 97. As it turns out disconnecting the battery for about 1 1/2 hours reset the ecu. I was going to leave it disconnected for longer but I need to drive a long ways tomorrow so I wanted to test the car tonight. Cross my fingers, so far so good my car seems to be fixed. Thanks for the help and support!
