New Wheels
I finally broke down and got a "new" set of wheels and rubbers from a friend just recently. They're 18x7" Enkei RS-6's wrapped in 225/40 Sumitomo HTR+ tires.
I've had it on for only a weekend and i can easily tell the difference between the new rubbers and my old RE-92's.
Being blessed with a very wet and rainy saturday and a hot+humid Sunday i managed to test these out rather well the past couple of days.
The difference between these and the RE-92's are almost like night and day.
- Where the Potenza's would break loose, from a stop, even at slight throttle in wet roads - the HTR+ would just grip.
- Where the Potenza's would start slipping when going on a fast turn, the HTR+ would keep biting.
- Where the Potenza's would give you mushy handling in fast L-R-L maneuvers, the HTR+ would give you almost instantaneous sharp responses.
As far as ride quality and all that goes, there's a little bit more road noise but it seems to have tapered a bit since i first put the tires on. The ride is not necessarily stiff - my best description is "sharp" and has a bit more road feel (the good type).
Another very noticeable thing which i noticed almost immediately - the car feels peppier when applying gas, whether on a roll or from a stop.
I'm not sure if this is attributed to the fact that each wheel/rim combo is about 4lb's lighter than OEM or that the tires have a lot more grip.
All-in-all, i'm happy with the "new" set. I now join the legions of others out there that finally woke up and asked themselves the question, "Why did i wait this long to swap out my Potenza's?"

I already have the springs... just waiting on struts/shocks to go with it Though for now i think this is fine - i go through some pretty rough roads every day to/fro work, i'm not sure i'd like the ride after dropping the car.
I went with what i have since it was a deal i just could not refuse, the whole set was given to me for free. The load rating is 88v - or about 600lbs less than the Potenza's (divided evenly across all four corners). As long as i don't load up the Max too much and/or stress the tires i should be fine.

When it wears out i'll definitely consider other sizes, for now i've got about 75-80% tread left on it - so got a long way to go

I already get on average 30mpg, if anything i'm starting to think i'll lose some of that efficiency with the smaller tires - have to compensate for the 3% speedo error somehow
But i'm not complaining. After going through puddles like hot knife on butter today, i just felt at ease knowing it won't hydro like the Potenza's

Re: New Wheels
Very nice, Probably the nicest set of wheels I have seen on a max in sometime. By the way, How much for the set of wheels and rubbers?

Wheels
Stock wheels are 7" otherwise you would be able to put almost any kind of rubber on them but wqith the 7" wheels your stuck with 225/50/17's or 235/50/17's and thats within the 3% of error.

Aren't the stock wheels 7.5" wide?
Why did you go smaller? With less rubber on the road, it will make you feel a little quicker and should improve your gas mileage.
