i'd imagine a close race. i know the spec v can take out the mazdaspeed protoge in the 1320.

and they are pretty even with a 5spd 2k max. a 2k2-3 maxima will definately take the mazdaspeed tho.

I've driven my friend's MazdaSpeed Protege and it felt pretty quick. It would not stand a chance against my 2K3 but would probably be a good race for a 3.0L VQ.

However, the thing handles like crazy. Changes direction effortlessly. After driving the Protege, the max felt fast in a straight line, but really heavy and soft in the corners.
