"rolling" when in gear?

hey guys, haven't been on in a while cause of work and junk, but was just wondering if any of you guys are having a problem, if it is a problem, with your '03/'02 6 speed max's rolling when you're parked and in gear. of course, this doesn't happen on a flat surface, but even the slightest degree will start rolling her. i know that it's going to roll if it's on a larger hill, but even a very small one? is there something wrong w/ my clutch? it feels weird and at times hard to shift, but then again it's always been like that. tia.

with a 6spd, doesn't matter if the car is in a inclined surface or flat. If the car parked in 1st gear or whatever gear, the engine is off. It SHOULDN'T still be moving.

in which gear you had parked then it was rolling ?
it shouldn't roll in first or reverse for sure. but in 5 or 6th it's possible on bigger hill.

Yes it did and scared the crap out of me. My driveway is about 10-15% incline and one day I found my 5 spd half way into the street, even though I left it in first gear! All I could think of was, crap there goes the timing belt and I'm glad it didn't hit anything...

Ever since I make sure it's always left in gear AND the parking brake is on, and tell my wife to do the same. At 60K that timing belt is gone for sure.

CCS2k1Max -- timing belt?
I was under the impression Maximas had timing chains.
When your chain starts to stretch or gets out of adjustment you will hear a loud ticking/clacking as it hits the top of the cover. This can be as simple as a 20 minute repair to tighen it back up.

Why would you not use the parking brake? Beside always having done so, in (at least 2002 where I looked) the owners manual on page 5-13 it clearly states...

Do not use the gear shift in place of
the parking brake. When parking, be
sure the parking brake is fully en-
gaged.

yep, VQ30DE's (at least in 2k and later, dunno about earlier models) are timing-chain-driven.

you may be right on that one brianc, and that would put my mind at more ease since chain would handle the engine moving backwards much better than a belt.

Personally, I usually leave the car with the e-brake on, and use 1st or reverse ONLY if on a significant incline/decline.

Why would you want to only use the gears and rest the weight of the car on them? Stick to the e-brake.

Yeah, I'm trying to figure that out myself...Isn't that what the parking brake is for?? I don't understand why people wouldn't use it...I park on an incline in my driveway, and I ONLY use the parking brake, never had any problems...

If even the slightest incline causes the car to roll when using just the trans then you have a problem. As new as the car is this shouldn't happen.
I know some cars will roll when reverse is used but I only use 1st.

As far as resting the weight of the car on the gears. What kind of a load do you think is on them when you nail it off the line or chrip 2nd.

I can only speak for myself, but the reason I did not use the parking brake was the crappy OEM pads that rusted to the rotors when new and wet. After a couple "thumps" from the rear end and the dealer telling me "it's normal" I gave that a try, but either way, I was fu@Ked as I found out. Now that the crappy OEM pads are broken in, the sticking hasn't happened any more.

As for the rolling while in gear, I am not about to try to "duplicate"...

Well, just do what I'm gonna do and replace the pads/rotors if that's giving you problems. It will be worth it for the added performance anyway. I noticed all the rust and crap all over the rotors too. I don't know if that's normal for rotors or if it's just the crappy OEM rotors at work. I'm guessing the latter...

As others have pointed out, timing chain not timing belt. Curious though - why would you expect that this would affect a timing belt? The car moves, the engine turns over, valves get out of the way...?

Having the misconception that it was a belt, stretching of the belt itself by turning the opposite way.

wow, thx for all of the help guys. the reason why i typically don't use the e brake is cause when i used to do it all the time w/ my svt, it would get locked and am kind of afraid that it'll do it again. but i have been using it ever since i learned that it rolls when i'm in gear. but thx again for the help guys.
