As the owner of a CA/NLEV with a Cattman Y-Pipe, I would like to sound off with everyone else by saying we really want headers, but I'm certainly not replacing my current Y-Pipe just to put another in.

It would be very nice to be able to buy just the headers and then worry about the whole emissions issue during install.

Since these aren't SS, what kind of warranty coverage should we expect? Any at all? I know you were generous to a lot of people when they had flex issues with your Y-pipe, if something even worse than that rears its head down the road, what are you going to do about it?

$750 is a lot of ****ing money (to me). Plz excuse my French.

<edit>

BTW, I'd also wait for the ones which would use the O2 sensors. I'd rather not have my motor run rich/lean if I can help it.

BTW Brian, I had to convert to Fed-Spec to accommodate the turbo exhaust system.

Deac

This can happen, but since I do not want to be stuck with a downpipe that has no application, separate headers will not be available until I'm at the end of this batch and ready to re-order or, better yet, by special order with the next batch. Since this is the first lot I've sold, it would be difficult to predict exactly when they'll all be sold.

Sorry Justin, but any potential for a discount went into the pockets of the Kiwi freight forwarder, Qantas airlines and the US Government. I got incredibly screwed on the freight and Customs assessed the duties at twice what they should have been. After these costs (which will be avoided next time) there's just no room for discounts.

Keep in mind that despite the availability of the headers, the market for used Cattman stainless pipes will remain strong. They never wear out, so used ones will always be a good value and in demand.

As I noted in my original message, more testing is needed on top of my one baseline run (against a stock y-pipe), but my best guess would be that the headers make 40-50% more than a Cattman y-pipe.

I am reluctant to speculate about combinations of parts I haven't tested together, but I would guess that you'd end up with 22-28 extra hp at some point on the rpm range, depending on the age and condition of your car. Keep in mind that the catback exhausts make some power, but never a lot. I've heard claims for 15-20hp from a catback exhaust and that's absolutely rediculous. More like 5-8hp, I don't care whose part it is.

so let me get this straight,i have a cattman y pipe now, in order to get a set of these heders ill have to replace my cattman y with the downpipe that comes with this which i dont have a problem doing but will that downpipe give me the same 10hp that my old y was giving me in addition to the 16hp brian dynoed to his header??becase he did mention he dynoed the prototype header to a STOCK ypipe. because if this downpipe that comes with it doesnt add any more power than what the header does itself, it will be like takin out my old y and putting in this header all to give me a 16hp(header)-10(myold cattman y)=overall 6hp gain for $750 i dont think its worth it. So in other words we should all hope the pipe that comes with it elimites the precats. oh and i know u guys like my math skills

You are assuming that the headers will make the same power on your car that they did on my 105k mile 97, but since this is the 5th gen board, I'm going to assume that they'll do somewhat better on yours. To get a more accurate projection you might want to review what I wrote a bit more carefully -- including the fact that on my old car they made 18, rather than 16hp -- and re-calculate the numbers.

They do eliminate all pre-cats; as I noted, they replace all parts between the heads and catalytic convertor.

I guess they will fit. In my case I could get it now or wait for the next batch w/ the o2 sensor. I prefer to wait and get the right specs.

I really think this is the wisest choice. I don't want anyone to get the idea that I'm recommending that the typical customer purchase these with the assumption they can be easily installed in a CA/NLEV Maxima. Unless someone is very savvy about this sort of thing and has access to good welding and machining services, I strongly advise NOT getting the current header set for the CA/NLEV VQ30DE engine.

Wait a minute... If I understand you correctly, you've got it wrong. I never tested the headers and the stock y-pipe together -- that doesn't make any sense. The "before" dyno test involved the stock exhaust manifolds and the stock y-pipe. The "after" dyno test replaced those parts with the full Cattman header system (which includes the header manifolds and downpipe, replacing everything between the heads and the catalytic convertor).

I certainly understand if you would prefer to hang onto your Cattman y-pipe -- its a great piece of equipment and the most effective y-pipe available.

That said, please review my original post and the related discussion since. It is not possible to effectively design headers around a stock or after market VQ30E y-pipe. There's nothing ambiguous about this -- it just isn't possible -- the downpipes stand too high and the runners are not equal length. What more can I say? I didn't just choose to do it this way, it is the only proper way to do it. Would it be better to come up with a significantly less effective, inferior design so that no one has to throw out their old y-pipes?

In regards to these being carbon steel rather than stainless, the pipes have been ceramic coated by HPC NZ, and they carry HPC USA's lifetime corrosion warranty. Other materials and workmanship issues will be covered by our one-year quality coverage.

$750 ain't peanuts to me either.

"Sweet" What is the estimated price for the Y-pipe???... This Y-pipe won't cause a check engine light nor have fitment issues like Warpspeed's Y-pipe???...

We'll charge what we charge for our other y-pipes, $350 in 304 stainless, bullet-proof silent flex, racing-grade merge collector. The prototype didn't throw a CEL, and frankly I don't know why it would, this does nothing to disturb the precats or main cat. In fact, its the first y-pipe since the 89-94 series that does not eliminate any of the stock emissions components.

Fitment went well, I know of no problems with it. We build these on an extremely rigid manufacturing fixture that locates the three flanges precisely where they are (in 3D space) on the stock pipe, within a few thousandths of an inch.

Cattman Headers are now in stock, ready to ship.

Our new headers for the VQ30DE engine (all 1995-1998 and 1999-2001 Maximas/I30s with Federal emissions) have been delivered and are in stock, ready to ship.

It makes perfect sense to me that a new y pipe will be required.

What I want to know is are the headers/y pipe available for the 3.5 2003,
if not when?
Thanks

I'm confident that there would be a singificant gain, but on the basis of one dyno test, under one specific circumstance, answering your question would just be speculation on my part (which I try to avoid).

Yes, I'm back.

I have a pretty good ordering service that handles whatever inventory I have at the time, but they don't have a clue about anything that isn't on the shelf.

Yes, its my intent for the next batch to be a universal design with all the ports the CA/NLEV version needs, with plugs for the ones that the other versions don't need.

That said, somebody's going to have to get adventurous with one of these sets here in the States because the Maximas in New Zealand do not have the CA/NLEV sensors and the development will not take place there. This will involve sensor placement and, if necessary, a solution to any "objections" from the ECU.

I will make a more formal announcement than this if I need to, but I will refund a substantial amount of the header purchase price to anyone who can come up with a complete and successful solution. I will negotiate the amount directly with anyone who is interested. Write me at bcatts@earthlink.net.
