Check Engine Soon light is for converter???

My check engine light went on and I got the codes read. Its for the converter. Obviously its emmisions related. I was told that it probably is a computer glitch since the car is only 3 years old. I was also told that converters are expensive so i should wait and see instead of paying for it...So he said I should just have the codes reset.

Does this make sense?
I have read about a "emmisions warranty"..what is that???? I did a search but nothing really came up...

Thanks,
Mike

Yeah, the Check Engine light can light up if a catalytic converter is bad--the ECU uses a 2nd oxygen sensor after the converter to tell (if that O2 sensor flutters more than a certain amount, it's proof that the converter is failing... normal converter operation shows an O2 sensor reading that doesn't vary more than .1V I believe)
Get it cleared, then see if it comes on again. If it does, definitely get it replaced sometime (not 100% sure about the emissions warranty, talk to the dealer!)

Thanks for the help. Do you know how much a new converter would cost?? I just had an emissions test and it passed. My car is not under the normal warranty anymore so i don't know if it would be covered under the emissions warranty..whatever that may be... Thanks again.

a random tech aftermarket cat goes for around $180. This has better flow characteristics then OEM. Though make sure that the cat is the problem because it is illegal to remove/replace functioning cat unless the car has over 50,000miles on it. www.custommaxima.com has the random tech cats

I recently had an emissions related SES light come on and my dealer replaced the part under the emissions warraty. He said the emissions warranty was 80,000 miles.

Thanks for the info. I got 41k on the Max so i am eligable. If it happens next time I will go to pepboys and get my codes read and then go to the dealer. If i take the car the the dealer will they have to run the code again...probably right?? then they will charge me the money for the computer read.. right?? damn stealerships...
