how to decode the VIN code?
I can't speak directly to the 5th gen, but one place to get the info is from the Factory Service Manual (which is actually a CD) from the dealer. In looking at the Factory Service Manual on my 93 and assuming that the 5th gen layout is similar except for definitions:
Positions 1-3 identify as "Nissan, Passenger Vehicle, e.g., JN1
Position 4 identifies engine type, e.g., H = VG30E, E = VE30DE
Position 5 indicates vehicle line, e.g., J = Nissan Maxima
Position 6 indicates model change, e.g. 0
Position 7 indicates body type, e.g., 1 = sedan
Position 8 indicates restraint system, e.g., S = Standard, P = Automatice
Position 9 indicates the check digit (0 to 9 or X), i.e., the diagnostic trouble code for the check digit is determined by mathematical computation, e.g., 3.
Position 10 indicates the model year, e.g., P = 1993 year model
Position 11 indicates manufacturing plant, e.g., T = Oppama
Position 12-17 indicates the vehicle serial number.
Again, I don't know how closely the positioning fo characters is similar or same for 5th gen, and obviously some of the codes may be different, but hope this is a start for you.
