Why is I35 5 Speed and not Maxima

Hi,

I was just looking at the I35 page and realized its a 5 speed auto. Anyone know why this wasn't an option on the 02-03 Maximas? Does the 5 speed make any noticeable difference? Thanks!

Sam

Actually, if you drive your max and watch the tach, you'll see it shifts four times....meaning 5 gears

Yeah I know that the 6th has it, I just meant since I thought mechanically the I35 and Maxima were almost the same (obviously most of the car is the same) that the trans would be the same. Didn't even notice the shifting. Thanks for pointing that out.

Yeah, come again? Why would they not advertise 5 speed auto? I'm curious.

i think the fourth 'shift' you are referring to is the torque converter locking up... it's not an extra gear.

Umm... if you look at the specs when you go to build the I35 on the Infiniti website, the tranny is a 4-speed just like the 2k2 maxima. For some reason the specifications say the fuel economy is 20/26 based on a 5-speed. I think its a typo on Infiniti's part... the two cars are identical per se when it comes to engine and tranny.

Well I mentioned the 5 gears because I'm assuming it's a similar situation as my last generation Accord V6...it goes up to D4 on the shifter but it really is a 5-gear tranny...the dealer told me so too...

Only the current generation Accord comes with a 5spd Tranny. Your dealership was playing you for a fool.

That extra "shift" feel you get is your TC locking.
