3rd gear in auto?

Is it harmful/bad for the tranny to if i drive an automatic in 3rd gear all the time and shift to "D" if needed like on the highway? It seems like the car pulls better this way. Occasionally when driven in "D", my ride lags when i try to accelerate while cruising at 50-60 mph. I can hear my intake growl but it was accelerating very slowly if it was accelerating at all. But once i downshift manually to 3rd or floor it to make it shift...it pulls like crazy. Any suggestions?

Just turn OFF the o/d.... it does the same thing.

I do that all the time. Shifting over to three is just turning the overdrive off. Correct me if I'm wrong....

I used to do this all the time also before I had the hesitation TSB done. I thought it was normal until I discover the TSB on this site. Have you brought it in for this TSB? It definitely makes a difference. Now it accelerates smoothly. Get it done, you'll be a lot happier with your car.

Was this 03-022 and/or 03-023? Thinking of scheduling an appointment to have this taken care of on mine as well as the wind noise and hood vibration TSB.

Thanks,
-Tim

Print it out and bring it in with you. Good Luck

Thanks to Studman for the TSB info.

I brought my ride in like 3 months ago for the "lack of power" tsb...and those damn bastards voided my warantee b'coz i had the injen cai.
They even printed it out on the receipt "Lack of Power TSB"...warantee voided due to aftermarket intake. ARGHHHH

That sucks. How come you didn't remove it prior to taking it in?

Take it somewhere else, bro, and remove the Injen when you do! This TSB is a known problem and they should do it even if you do have an intake. Although, TSB's are done under the discretion of the dealership I think you need to make an effort to go somewhere else and get it done. You are paying for or payed for their product thus its within your rights. Don't take no for an answer!

Sorry if this sounds dumb but is the TSB for lack of power or hesitation?

There are actually two which you can find at www.alldata.com

03-022 is for Hesitation on Acceleration
03-023 is for Lack of Engine Power

I thought the hesitation that all us 5th generation owners are experimenting is from having a different type of gas pedal, i heard its not mechanical its electrical or something so when u give it gas, it has to figure out for a split sec how much power to actually give out?

does this sound right or should i just shut up and go get it done ahah

Yes, it is doing the same thing, which is not allowing the TCM to upshift into 4th gear, so when you punch it, you're already in 3rd vs. having to wait for the tranny to take it's sweet ole time downshifting. That's IF it even does.

BTW, you're actually turning OD "off", not on. The light just comes on, correct? At least that's how it has been on all the auto Nissans I've driven.

So they "voided" your complete warranty from an INJEN?

If so, that's BS, but believable. Another example WHY you should remove ALL aftermarket parts BEFORE going to the dealer.

a dealer told me he'd void my warranty all the way from the intake to the cat if I put on an aftermarket intake...

it takes 10 minutes to take it off and 10 more to put it back on. It's just dumb not to.

I don't want to sound dumb either but my teacher said there is no dumb question other than the question that was just answered. So anyway what the hell is TBS, because I shift into 3rd all the time when I'm trying to get more power and pull. Also Where is the Over Drive button, I didn't even know we had one I thought it was putting into 3rd.

TSB = Technical Service Bulletin, ie how a dealer should proceed to fix a common problem.

Mine too! Still debating whether I should fork out $1.5K for an extended or just say screw it and put it towards mods.

I'm going to clean up the Max and take her in for the 2nd time EVER to have a whole bunch of piddly sheit fixed, ie slow passenger window, vibrating drivers' miror, clunking front suspension, steering wheel pop, rotor warping, etc....

If I can at least get the rotors turned, I'll be thrilled.

extended warranties are not worth it! Especially if you do most of the work your self. They do not cover everything the bumper-bumper does and sometimes have a dedectable where they do band-aid fixes.

As for voiding the warranty, they cannot do this. They need to prove the intake caused the problem. It will be a hassle to take it to this dealer so take it somehwere else.

4K is pretty high considering I typically shift and keep it under 3Krpm. I'd drop her into 4th anytime you've gone over 50mph or so, especially for more then a few minutes.

Around town in my Sentra, I leave the OD off. Once I get cruising, I click on the OD. I have 150K on my Sentra tranny doing this.
