Cat bolts rusted on
Cat bolts rusted on
I tried to unbolt the catalytic converter off my 2000 SE (70k miles) but the bolt and nut seemed to be fused by a caking of rust. I tried to tap as much off as possible before getting a wrench on it but seems to strip the bolt a bit. Are my options now to use air tools or take a sawsall to the bolts? I'm installing a new short throw shifter.
i've recently tried to do the same thing, but couldn't get the bolts loose. even tried the wd-40 thing and still nothing. I just ended up taking the car to an auto shop and paid them a few bucks to loosen the bolts for me then drove it back home ( very short drive) then did the rest myself.
Go to an autostore and buy some liquid wrench called PB... I think that's the stuff. I just went in and asked for your strongest liquid wrench and autozone and pep boys suggested it to me. Worked for me.

Thanks to all who posted. I called my local Mineke muffler shop and said that it is illegal to remove or assist in the removal of a catalytic converter..... blah, blah, blah. Anyway, I'm gonna go to the local mechanic shop and see what they say. Also I have a Pep Boys near me and will get a can of that PB blaster stuff. This cat's gonna come off one way or another!!!
