Alternator or Battery? Neither? (long)

About 2 weeks ago i go to start up my car like usually in the morning and let it warm up. After hearing the nasty noise that my 2000 makes because of the self adjusting chain i go inside(let it warm up in the mornings always). so i came out and go to the gym which is about a 2 minutes drive. I come out from the gym and go to start my car and it wouldnt start. i get it jumped thinking that the battery probably needed a charge because of the night before when i was trying to reset the ecu and the auto lights were on. so i am in my car letting it warm up before i drive off. i go to turn on the a/c and the ****in car shuts off, no stalling involved, the car turns off. im like what the ****. i try to turn it back on and nothing happend. there were no lights on, just the mileage. then the mileage dimmed out. so i got it jumped again, and made sure the a/c was off. i drive home and let my car sit there i went inside and came out 5 minutes later. i go to turn on the a/c, the radio, everything works. so i go inside, come out about an hour later and try to start the car. This time though the radio went on then off and the dash lights were on and dimmed out, so did the mileage. so im really hating my maxima right about now. i get it jumped, and let it warm up. i start my drive into brooklyn. im about 20 minutes from home so the car has been on for a while, i hit the bridge, go on the lower level(less traffice) and the headlights go on. So what happens guys? The car shuts off. keep in mind the whole ride there no a/c no radio. get my car jumped, go across and see a mechanic he says the battery is shot gives me a free one that he says will last about a month.

i went home, talked to my father, he had a brand new batter in his car that he doesnt use anymore. The batter had been sitting there for about 2 months but i put it in my car and it started right up. Then tonight i was outside fixing my subs in my car. i had the car on, i go to turn it off because i had to check the power. when i turn it back on i hear that whining noise come from the engine, (the supposed self adjusting chain) so i was like what the **** its only supposed to do that is its a cold start. so i turned it off and back on. the ****in noise was there again. i do it one more time, and when i went to start it back up the same ****, it wont start.as with the last battery the mileage came on but nothing else. how is that possible. Here is what doesnt make sense. How the **** would a battery die like that. Plus why did it make that whining noise. I really cant figure this out do you guys think its the batter or alternator? or is the whining noise happening because its not gettin enough power from the alternator? anything, what ever you possibly think it is.

thanks
