My first problem ever @ 31,800mi - Vibration - HELP

This is my first ever problem with my Max. The front end comes under severe vibration around 45mph and especially around 60-70mph. I thought the wheels might need balancing - never had it done before.

So today I had all 4-wheels balanced @ Firestone shop for $50. Well I still have the same problem! Is there something else I should be looking at, or did these jerks NOT do their job right?...

Also, I need to travel 150mi round-trip to NYC tonight & I think I may have to cancel it due to hazard of having my front end fall apart...

What do you guys think could be causing this? Any ideas? I plan on taking it to the dealer... but Sunday serviceshops are very "easy" to find.

does it happen when you are braking or all the time? Like nyc2kmax said, if its when you are braking, its probably your rotors. stock maxima rotors are terrible and tend to go bad rather quickly.

No no... not when I'm braking... when I'm riding normally at those speeds.

Is that the same problem you guys are talking about, or was it when you were braking only?

Thanks,
G

what kind of tires do you have? i'm betting its the stock potenzas. find a tire shop that can measure road force variation in a tire. your tires could be the issue.

I had the same issue. Turned out to be my wheel barrings. It got so bad that Nissan had to replace the entire hub assembly due to the vibration. Your still under warranty. Take it in. Good luck!

if it was the motor mounts, the car would shake really bad when not moving.

I'm having the same problem but only when I accelerate, the second I let off the gas I'm smooth sailing. I've heard CV Joint, coil, tires, alignment. I'm getting my alignment done on tuesday, if that doesn't help, I'm ripping the engine bay and suspension apart until i find the culprit! haha

You were correct in that your wheels need to be balanced. Not a big deal, it's just hard to find someone to do the job right. I went to Goodyear and I didn't have much luck with them. Go to an Infiniti dealership. At least you'll know they're probably doing things correctly. Also, make sure your left and right tires are equal pressure. If after this, they're still vibrating, then you have something wrong with a tire or rim.

I would say your wheels were out of balance, but since you had that done...maybe you have a bent rim? I bet most people have a rim that isn't straight/true, but don't know it b/c it's not blatantly visible.

Well Said. Just because you have HAD your wheels balanced, doesn't mean your wheels ARE balanced. I go to Good Year. Often have to take it back 2-3 times before they get it right, with SPECIAL instructions. REMOVE old weight tape from the wheels. HAND TORQUE lug nuts. I like good year as I have grown to know the guys and they are RIGHT across the street from my office. VERY convenient.

If your car is vibrating heavily upon deceleration, have rotors turned (very common amongst us Max owners). I had this done and the car now rides good as new, even makes balancing easier IMO.

If it's vibrating upon acceleration...Check tires thoroughly (rubber could be separating), check motor mounts, joints, bearings.

Hope it helps.

Part # DAT 40210-2Y000... Bearing assy-fr $41.06 ea.
Courtesy replaced mine for no charge. I purchased the 100,000 mile extended warranty. Hope that it isn't the brakes if your anywhere close to 30,000. I was at 34,000 and Nissan said they wouldn't cover it. I found a local guy that turned all four and put EBC greens on the front for $69.00. Now 13,000 more miles and the judder is back. I think we will all be fighting with the rotors until we go aftermarket. Good luck!

Damn. Thanks everyone. I will check in with the dealership this week. I suspect it was "NOT" balanced properly... bastards! If Nissan charges me for balancing and that solves the problem, then I will get the other guys to refund my $$$ 100%.

Just FYI....it took me three tries with a Hunter 9700 Road Force analyzer to get my balance right....definitely try a Road Force.
