Anything I should look for to determine if an SE is a Lemon? Which year is best? Are brakes different in 2002? How about price ranges?

Don't bother getting a 2k1, I myself used to own a 2000 Maxima SE. Buy either a 2k2-2k3(obviously reason being the engine) I'm pretty sure brakes were upgraded for the 02-03. Price ranges for 2001's are from 11,000-15,000 depending on options, mileage, and maintenance. 2k2's 15-21K, 2k3's 17-23K.

Request/run Carfax's on any used vehicle you plan on buying (to check for salvage/flooded/stolen)- also wouldn't hurt to have a trusty mechanic take a look at it-
Overall Nissan's VQ30/VQ35 engines are world class in reliability- but thats about the only thing world class about it-

My only gripe is the HID theft of the 02 and 03's. Other than that I think that 02 is great.

 

My only gripe about my wife's 2k01 SE is, the seats are already tearing...and my wife ain't fat at all. At 55k, the SES soon light has been a constant. The brake rotors are warped. Other than that, it's a great car.
