3rd gear grinding:Conclusion (long)

Well, I have posted my 3rd gear grinding exp. in the past and now finally had the dealer fix it. To sum up, the dealer verified the 3 gear grinding noise I would get (many of us get it), and they had to get in touch with Nissan California, and then a DST (District Service Tech.), to figure out what to do. It took them over a month to learn what to do, and I finally gave my car in last Mon (Columbus day). Just got the car back today (Mon), and 3rd gear is like pure butter! So far so good. In the past, above 3K she would grind, (u could feel/hear it). Now she feels good.

I had notified NNA last month, and much to my surprise, they were on it. They kept me abreast of the situation, and called me on Fri. and this morning, telling me I would get my car today. I think it was this pressure (I like to believe) that really yielded positive results. The rep. was very helpful, and I thought after the dealer took the car in, that NNA would step back, and let the dealer/owner sort things out, but the rep. kept in contact with the dealer, and it was the rep. that called me and told me I'd get the car today.

I didn't speak much with the dealer, cuz I was disappointed with their "we'll get it done" attitude. Altho today the serv. manager was cool, as I picked up the car, but he didn't offer me a loaner last week, (I didn't ask), and I shoulda asked for a free maintenance coupon of some sort, but I was happy to get my car back.

For those of you that have this familiar grinding, I really recommend you take the car in, and demonstrate the problem with a mech. The receipt I got stated things replaced/repaired included "3rd gear bearing input", "needle bearings", (and a few other things. I left it in the Max). Clearly there's a mechanical problem, and for those who changed to Red Line or other fluids, and are still exp. grinding, take it to the dealer and have it fixed.

Sorry for the long post, Darth Vader, and all you 6 spd guys will prolly fnd this interesting. I am sure glad to have her back, and boy does shifting feel good now!

Oh yeah, I have noticed that she's not the wild animal she usually is. They pulled the batt. bec. my presets, memory seating has gone, so do u think the ECU is in learning mode? (I hope so).

Thanks for all that have helped me on this. U gotta be patient, and persistent, but NNA should come through, and so should the dealer.

SHIFT - Haha, now I can (smoothly).....

Regards,

ShysMax

This is great news, I have switched to MT-90 recently and it has gotten better but in light of your findings I may persue this further.

Any chance you can scan and post your receipt ??

Thanks again.

Darth Vader, Maxima Dave, and all other 6 speeders with 3rd gear (or other gear) grinding problems. Note: I said grinding, not notchiness. I think its a given that the 6 spd. in the '02/'03 is notchy. I can't scan the receipt, but I have it in front of me, so I'll duplicate it here:

4 qts 999mp-mtf00p 75w-85 manual t (ck. TSB NTB03-015 its
interesting).
1 32203-8h500 bearing-input g
1 32273-8h500 bearing needle
1 32273-8h505 ring-baulk
1 32603-8h512 spring-shifting
1 32609-8h500 insert-shifting
1 32610-8h501 coupling & hub
1 32270-8h561 gear-4th input
1 32275-8h510 bearing-input g

If u really need a scanned copy, I can have my friend do it. PLMK.

MaximaDave: I spoke to my rep. he said that all reps' are qualified to handle each case equally, so there should be no problem there. If u all call, and get diff. reps, hopefully word will spread around NNA, that there's a legit. problem with the 6 spds.

Well, I've been driving the car since Monday, and 3rd gear is great! However, on the way back from the dealer, my damn SES light went on. Its been on since Mon, and today is Fri. I have disconnected the bat, and will ck. it tom. morning. The car also feels a little sluggish, (not like the TSB's) but its not the animal it used it to be. Anyone here know if when they fixed the 3rd gear grind, if they had to touch the ECU, or maybe change gear ratios or something??

Anywayz, guys, do something!! If u got grinding problems, call NAA, and get 'em involved. If we're getting this problem now, what's gonna happen 3 years from now?? If Redline works, that's great, but I think its clear from my receipt that there are faulty parts that should be replaced. Hope this thread helps.

Thanks once again. I think I will call NNA. I have a 3rd gear grinding on every 15 shift or so. I keep thinking it is me though. Did you talk with anyone in particular at NNA ? Any phone # you called would be helpful. I have brought the car to the dealer with that complaint but it "could not be duplicated"

Thanks, Anakin

I took mine into the dealer also a few months ago. They did it well, took about a week in there just waiting for parts since they kept sending them altima 5spd parts. The only cool thing was that they didn't notice that I was not 21 and gave me a rental for the meantime. They showed me the open tranny and it had a lot of scrap metal in there floating around.
Here is my receipt.

2 32604-8h501 RING BAULK
1 32600-8H501 HUB & SLEE
2 32603-3A000 SPRING INS
3 32609-8H500 INSERT-SHI
1 32275-8H510 BEARING-IN
1 32260-8H511 GAR ASSY
4999MP-MTF00P 75W-85 MAN

I wish it had the prices to see how much money and aggravation I caused these guys, because I really hate my dealer.

I took my car in last time and they said there were no issues. This time they will FIX it.

I get some griding going into 3 at 4k+ rpm shifts; is this a mechanical problem, or just the fact that my syncro's starting to go...I have a 5 speed, sorry to get off topic...

mine quickly went from bad to worse....it didn't do it before summer, then when i left for a month and a half and came back, it was doing it slightly at 3k, and did it worse as the RPMs rose...no grinding under 3k....then as time went on, it got pretty bad and sometimes would grind at 2.5k and it let out a horrible grind at 3k....annoying as ****, and sometimes i couldn't even get it in to gear because of it....now it's buttersmooth! not only do i have a new tranny, but also some new MT-90!

For those that have had this fixed.
Was your car under warranty at the time?
How agressive of a shift did it take to get the grinding?

My car just rolled over 90k and I have no warranty at all.
Mine only does it when really winding out second and shifting to third.

I was using MT-90. Car just turned 50,000

Took the car in today, the tech vertified the problem and told me he has seen a couple like this, especially with the spec-v. He told me Nissan doesn't allow them to fix the trannies anymore so he will need to replace it.

THANK GOD this issue will be fixed for good, I truely cannot wait!

I had questions about this 3rd gear problem about a year ago in my '03 SE (About 26,000 miles then, 39,000 now). If I do a 6-3 downshift (actually a perfect downshift when exiting the highway onto a sweeping curve exit) I get the grind.

Generally feedback on this was that they all do this and I was just asking too much of the synchros. Tried double clutching. With this I could make the shift maybe 3 out of 4 times, not consistently enough to avoid doing damage to the tranny over time.

End up doing a 6-4 downshift, then a 4-3 downshift. Not entirely satisfactory because of the U path needed for the 6-4, and 4's not the gear I want for these types of exits so I do have do make the second downshift.

Now it sounds like there is some common problem with these tranny's. Would be nice to see if they come up with a TSB on this to make it clear. Of course, with my luck that will be right after my powertrain warrantey expires.

Ok, GREAT NEWS - They DENIED my claim for a new tranny!

They said once when I brought the car in I had a STS installed. They said that voided my wntty eventho it's not installed now.

I'm just gonna take my car to a new dealer and let them take care of it.

Is anyone having any problems with the 03 tranny? I don't think I've ever seen a P/N change between the years, but I haven't seen many people with 03s with the problem. That doesn't mean its not coming (or hasn't already started).

Mine (at 56K+) doesn't grind going into third unless I just plain miss the shift. It does get HARD to shift (as in, it physically is a lot harder to make the shift **** move into the desired gear) at times but that's in all gears, not just 3rd. That's generally when its cold, though, and I know it has some to do with the altered pattern due to the STS.

FINALLY!!!!

Took my car to another dealer...test drove with a tech and the service manager. They said that the grinding is because I'm shifting too fast!??!? They are both morons...

Anywho....

Took my car to a very nice dealer. I sat in the car while the manager drove. I told him to keep the car in 1st gear, give it gas till about 4k RPM and then put it into 3rd. What do you know...."GRRIIINNDDDDDDD". Manager: "OMG You're right, this is horrible". Me:

Anyways, got a call today saying my tranny came in. WOOOOOTT

To add to that, I get a free loaner.

Can't wait!

I find it funny that everytime something breaks on my car i come on the org and find somebody with the same issuse. My car has been in the shop since last thursday, and this thread will definitely come in handy if there are any complication with the morons at nissan.
