Popping sounds while turning your steering wheel are caused by either a spring thats not seated correctly or a strut bearing thats hanging up.

I've had the same thing for the last 12k miles. Happens mostly when its raining out, so I'm thinking its related to a rubber part. I've replaced strut tops, spring insulators and the top hats above the springs with no luck.

Same thing here ESPECIALLY if I go over a bump/incline while flipping a U-turn.

There is a TSB for the passenger side, but not on the drivers. Something to do with power steering fluid pressure switch bolts hitting on part of the spring/perch.

Maybe something like that could happen on the drivers?

I also get a poping vibration through the steering wheel at low speeds while backing into parking spaces.

Have you checked to see if your cars' VIN is on this TSB list?

CHECK YOUR VIN NUMBER AND SEE IF YOU ARE ON THE LIST

Applies to 2001 Maxima, the following Vehicle Identification Number Ranges:
JN1CA31A*1T113697 - 113815;
JN1CA31A*1T319553 - 320204;
JN1CA31D*1T632735 - 633104;
JN1CA31D*1T841199 - 843066.
Applies to 2002 Maxima, the following Vehicle Identification Number Ranges:
JN1DA31A*2T000011 - 002829;
JN1DA31A*2T300022 - 317004;
JN1DA31D*2T200011 - 207916;
JN1DA31D*2T400020 - 442089.

The number of vehicles potentially affected is approximately 67,000.
Please review the disclaimer located at the bottom of this page for more instruction.

Reason for Recall
One of the parts of the front suspension on your vehicle which is called the transverse link may break where it is mounted to the frame. This may cause a knocking sound and abnormal steering. This may result in difficulty controlling the vehicle which, if ignored, could cause a crash.

What Nissan Will Do
In order to prevent this incident from occurring, your Nissan dealer will replace the transverse links on the left and right sides with new ones. This free service should take about two hours to complete, but your Nissan dealer may require your vehicle for a longer period of time based upon their work schedule.

What You Should Do
Contact your Nissan dealer at your earliest convenience in order to arrange an appointment to have your vehicle repaired. If you notice a knocking sound from the front of your vehicle and/or abnormal steering, you should stop driving and contact your Nissan dealer to arrange to have the vehicle towed to the dealer for repair.

If the dealer fails, or is unable to make the necessary repairs free of charge, you may contact the National Consumer Affairs Office, Nissan North America, Inc. at P.O. Box 191, Gardena, California 90248-0191. The toll free number is 1-800-NISSAN1 (1-800-647-7261). If you reside in Hawaii, please call 1-808-836-0888.

You may also contact the Administrator of the National Highway Traffic SafetyAdministration, 400 Seventh Street, S.W., Washington, D.C. 20590 or call the toll-free Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.

Nissan recalls may apply to specific VIN ranges, and due to equipment variation, options, prior repairs, etc., your vehicle may or may not be involved in a recall. To determine if your specific vehicle is affected by any recall, please contact your local Nissan dealer. It will be necessary to supply the vehicle make, model and identification number (VIN) to the dealer.

clucking noise could be caused by bad upper strut bearing or CV joint. check CV boot. if there is a hole or grease there could be an expensive problem. I've been having the same clucking/poping sound comming from driver side and I just hope it's upper bearing. David B gave me price for CV shaft. It's $436 each side.

I'm having that same popping vibration through the steering wheel at low speeds while backing into my parking spaces.

Did you ever find what was wrong with it?

all of you -check your swabar endlinks if you're getting popping during a leaning turn. When worn they can start binding. Ask me how I know...

i have somewhat the same problem and found this. if you look at the lower control arms there is a threade bolt with a rounded nut at the end. this is where you have your lock to lock on your steering wheel. i founf one side has the rounded bolt the other must have broke off. when i turn hard to the side that is broken and go over a dip or bump i get the noise. it should be nothing to worry about.

the bolt is there to stop you from turning the steering wheel all the way, so avoid locking the steering wheel when making a turn because the bolt will rub against the control arm and make that popping sound, my mechanic said its no big deal!

lol I have this problem too! Thats funny, I just figured it was a quirk of the car and ignore it.

Mine pops/clicks right at the apex of the wheel being centre aligned. When I cross the centre position from the left to the right or vice versa I have a click that I can feel through the steering wheel...

Im going to check my VIN right now and see if im on the list....
