...slip-sliding fun. It snowed pretty much all day here in MD. By the time I left work, we had around 4 or 5 inches on the ground. So, driving home was quite an adventure with the stock potenzas. I never really lost control or anything, but the tires give you no confidence at all in the snow. Taking off from a stop without slipping is near impossible. So, drive safely in bad weather with your stock tires...I have a feeling tomorrow morning will be another adventure...

I don't know about the Toyos, but I think they would be better since they are 16" tires rather than 17". The wider the tire, the more problems you have in snow. Man, my ABS really got a work out today.

UMD_MaxSE, I totally agree with you. I have the Potenzas and they are horrible in the snow. I live in NJ and we also got approximately 4-5 inches today. The drive home was a challenge!

snow

I replaced the Potenzas with Blizzaks for winter and love the traction.

The Potenzas on my max are horrible in the snow. It is like a giant sled. The abs never got a rest, and neither did the traction control.

I've read plenty of posts from members who have said that the Potenzas are horrible in the snow. I live in Jersey as well. I was at work last night till midnight so I had to drive through the whole mess. Judging from the other cars on the road I honestly dont think that the Potenzas are that bad. I usually find myself blowing by everyone else without compromising control. Thats just my experience so far. One thing though....from a dead stop, wheel spin is inevitable.

They aren't THAT bad... You gotta conted with the fact that they are 17", and fairly wide!!!!

However, they **could** be better... I drove up a hill yesterday, and slid back down :-) [living in NJ]

Funniest thing, was all the new SUV owner's believing they had sherman tanks...

Took me 4 hours to get home (usually a 30 min trip)... And is it me, or was there NO SALT in NJ last night???

It also a question of degree and experience. Up here there is snow on the ground from mid December to mid March. We have alot more experience in the snow and since the season is longer, there is more risk of accident. I actually yell at other Maximas still running 17's. There are some 225/50R17 snow tires, but I am sure that 205s are much better.

You do know that it is still possible hand-brake with snow tires. It's more predictable and you can have more fun on the big sweeping on ramps. Though I am it's not as fun as in a Skyline V spec!

True, a lot of people here don't know how to drive in snowy conditions. Some people either panic or are just plain careless. It's this mix of drivers that causes wrecks in bad weather. But since it hasn't been snowing a whole lot here, having 205 series snow tires is not really necessary. As for the e-brake..... it can be fun, but only so much with a front-wheel drive car...

Well, I say 205's since that is the only size they had... I would have taken 195's if they had them.

As fot the FWD, as I said, I would love a Skyline, or a WRX (which is available here).

It's all a question of driving within the conditions and having fun when you can.
