Question about the brake light.

There was a post about this yesterday and I was hoping for more info. Search seems to be broken.

My brake light stayed on yesterday after I took the parking break off. I checked the fluid and it was somewhat low but still about 1.5 cm above the low mark. I gently tested the car in the parking lot and the brakes seemed fine. If I got on the brakes pretty hard, the light goes off for a few minutes but comes back on.
Yesterday was the first freezing day here. This morning was very cold again and again, the brake light was stuck on.

My car has all original brake parts but only 30k miles. The fluids looks clean. The brakes seem to work fine, even under hard stopping.

Any ideas? Is the brake light only supposed to be for low fluid or does it have another purpose?
