Tighter gas cap= more milage?.....
Tighter gas cap= more milage?.....
I just found this out with our Maxes over the weekend. When i gas up i usually close the cap to one click and have been doing that ever since i got the car in August, but always been netting around 24.8-25.5 on the highway at speed of 65-80 mph. Over the weekend i gassed up and closed the cap to about 6 clicks(real tight) and drove the car, big diffrence ! I was netting 26.6-27.4 and even peaked 28.0 when i drove to Tampa(hour and half) at 75mph.
Didn't knew if any one knew this , so i wanted to share it with you all. If you did great! Never knew a tight gas cap could make such a diffrence.I also use 93 octane all the time if someone was going to ask me.

Probably just in your head. As mentioned above you can click it 500 times, but after one click it's not getting any tighter. Dito on the oil cap. I have heard that going past one click can ensure it's on tight enough to not through a check engine light sometimes but frankly I don't see how that is possible at all as theoretically one click is as tight as it's getting.
I'd imagine the difference has more to do with weather conditions, the pump (some pumps may "click" full at different capacities), etc. than the tightness of your gas cap...
I always click mine at 3 clicks, and I usually net 24-26mpg, but occasionally get 21-23 once in a while.

It's like a torque wrench. Once it clicks, it doesn't get any tighter. Figuring MPG needs to be done over time, not just one tank, because of variables mentioned above. Don't use the trip computer (not too accurate).
# miles / # gal = mpg Over time you will get a reliable average.
