Tighter gas cap= more milage?.....

I just found this out with our Maxes over the weekend. When i gas up i usually close the cap to one click and have been doing that ever since i got the car in August, but always been netting around 24.8-25.5 on the highway at speed of 65-80 mph. Over the weekend i gassed up and closed the cap to about 6 clicks(real tight) and drove the car, big diffrence ! I was netting 26.6-27.4 and even peaked 28.0 when i drove to Tampa(hour and half) at 75mph.

Didn't knew if any one knew this , so i wanted to share it with you all. If you did great! Never knew a tight gas cap could make such a diffrence.I also use 93 octane all the time if someone was going to ask me.

2 clicks or 6, it "clicks" at the same force so it's not getting tighter

Well with 8 clicks I get 24.3 mg and with 4 clicks I get 23.9, 2 clicks...forget about it, I only get 18 mpg

Probably just in your head. As mentioned above you can click it 500 times, but after one click it's not getting any tighter. Dito on the oil cap. I have heard that going past one click can ensure it's on tight enough to not through a check engine light sometimes but frankly I don't see how that is possible at all as theoretically one click is as tight as it's getting.

I'd imagine the difference has more to do with weather conditions, the pump (some pumps may "click" full at different capacities), etc. than the tightness of your gas cap...
I always click mine at 3 clicks, and I usually net 24-26mpg, but occasionally get 21-23 once in a while.

Are you going by the trip computer or manual calcualtions for your mpg? As for the gas cap clicks, as long as you tighten it until it clicks, that is all it takes to get it tight enough to hold pressure within the fuel tank.

... One click is the same as 6. It's like a medicine bottle, it just keeps going in the same thread when u click it over again.

It's like a torque wrench. Once it clicks, it doesn't get any tighter. Figuring MPG needs to be done over time, not just one tank, because of variables mentioned above. Don't use the trip computer (not too accurate).
# miles / # gal = mpg Over time you will get a reliable average.

you are torquing the gas cap so no way in hell it can be tighter.
Maybe they got better fuel at the station and you can see the results.

well according to my dealer, you have to click it 6 times to be fully tight or the ses light comes on. it used to all the time in my car. i dunno about the + in mpg though.

Your dealer is blowing smoke. I have never tightened my cap more than a couple clicks. I have even filled it with the engine running once. I have yet to have the SES light come on. As long as it clicks at least once, it's tight enough.

I removed my gas cap and put a cork in there a month ago and I am still on full with 1267 miles on the odometer. I am shocked that somebody found out about my little secret.

I don't know how that an improvment on gas with the gas cap being on tight. It doesn't get tight after you hear clicking.

Ohh 2002s are the beta version of our 2003. I guess they got it right on the 2003 and they let us click the cap once!
