Drop resistor personal update

I installed a switch to activate the drop resistor mod from the drivers seat, so I was messing with it tonight. Had it at 7/8 throttle from a standstill and I almost chirped the tires into 2nd. It was surprisingly hard shift, most defnatly harder than normal. Then gettin on the highway I took it up to a little into 3rd gear, but the shift from 2nd to 3rd under WOT was very hard and crisp. Again, much different than the normal shifting patterns. This was my first set of good trials, and it seems that my 2k2 reacted beautifully to the drop resistor. I love the switch, as normal, everyday driving requires regular shifting patterns, and I have the option of changing to the crisp shifts on demand. Last step now is get to the drags when they open again and see what the times tell me. I have 100% faith in this mod now though, and I would say that there is at least a tenth or two decrease in the time of shifting, so that should reflect future 1/4 miles times (seeing as I encounter 2 shifts in the quarter)

Yeah, I'd love to see some pics etc. of your switch, and perhaps instructions.

ya i just got my digital camera back today (was in gf's car in CT) so I'll be able to take some pictures in a little while when I wake up. Very easy install for the switch. I'll work on a little writeup for that today, along with the fog re-wire, and the straight pipe install

is this a free mod ? i have heard of this drop resistor mod, but never researched it.

was your straight pipe a custom maxima purchase, or local area muffler shop ?

too bad Im so far away, I would like to ride with you in the car and feel the shifts (and maybe drive the car ) in comparison to stock shift patterns.

good luck with it all. she's just itching to get back to the track

Ok,

Does this mod apply to 00 and 01 max's? I just tried it and could tell very very little if any difference. I disconnted the only plug (it was grey) in the very far right corner above the strut mount.

Any feedback would be much appreciated.

That super hard shift at wot is nice but remember how much of a load you are putting on the driveline. the half-shafts motor and transmission mounts were not made to take that kind of abuse. This mod puts way too much load into those items and will surely cause premature failure of these parts.

It's better for the tranny, but only slightly harsher for the rest of the driveline...and not enough to make any difference over the long term. Some of us have been running like this since we've had the car...

and this mod does apply to 00/01 auto max's. when the tranny is cold there isnt much of a difference, but let it warm up a bit - you'll be amazed

yes, forgot to mention that. plug the sensor back in. that way with the switch "on" the connections will be normal and the tranny will shift as usual. the switch is incorporated to break the connection, effectively 'disconnecting' the sensor

I am going to be doing this mod as soon as I get a tranny radiator, but am wondering if there is any way to incorperate this into the O/D button. maybe a small selenoid run off of the light in the dash. (light on = open line/resistor OFF, light off = closed line/resistor ON) I know that would be much more convinent than hitting O/D off AND drop resistor switch. Is this anything near feasable? If so, where do I get selenoids, nothing fancy, something to go under the dash.

well there are only two individual wires going into the sensor, so they're both going to carry the same voltage. It should make no difference which one is cut, since all we're doing is 'extending' that wire to pass through a switch.

You'll probably get the SES light...but not everyone has for some reason.

This seems like a very interesting mod and not expensive at all. WOW it's FREE???? I can get 5 of those then. That seems like a good idea for the track but not for regular driving. As soon as it gets warm and I go to the track again this WILL BE MY FIRST SPRING MOD. HoPING FOR 14.4s 14.3s?

Kloogy, i unplugged it and didn't get an SES light. If you do, you can probably reset the ECU using that timed method.

It doesn't matter, all you are doing is removing the resisitor from the circuit.

The first time you do it will not trip the SES light. The second time it does but after 3-4 days it went away for me. I didn't notice much difference in shift myself and far from even thinking about chirping shifts. I've been in a car with the VB mod and the shifts were a little harder and crisper than my car with the resistor unplugged.

My $.02

I can confirm it work on the 2k1, the tranny shift mutch faster than normal, I didn't put a switch I just unplug the plug, and it does work, a switch is a very good idea since you can use it when you want. This mod is a little annoying when driving at low speed cuz the tranny shift too hard, I would say the switch is the way to go.

Cheers
