Merry Xmas to me (pic, long)

Well, first a little history. I bought my 2k2 6 speed in August and I loved it. The previous owner had neons on it and an aftermarket alarm that was wired by pre-schoolers. The car also came with a SES light which was taken care of after 2 weeks. Got the car back and I loved it again.

I posted a couple of threads on shifting because I thiught it was kind of rough. Anyway brought the car in for hesitation TSB and Data Dot recall and developed a good relationship with the service department. I began to hear the clutch howl and the dealer duplicated the sound and ordered the parts.

I gave Nissan the car and they phoned me around noon to tell me my clutch was completely shot. They asked me to come in a view the parts so I would beleive them.

They showed my these:

My pressure plate, clutch plate, throw out bearing, and flywheel are shot. The flywheel, not pictured is BENT.

They told me this was from abuse and was not covered under warranty. I am totally depressed about this turn of events. I just want to get ride of the car but I will take a beating on it. Oh yeah, $ 1000.00 to fix.

Merry X-mas to me.

very unfortunate...... looking at the bright side your
Max will be in top shape after that .... and other ORG members can be assured their clutch is a wrap
when they experience clutch howl-

good luck

The TSB is for material wear, not physical bending. Sounds like that car was beat in it's previous life.

Sorry dude!!

Where did you buy your car?

Manual Maximas are driven very hard and take a lot of beating. That was the primary reason for me to get a brand new one...

Lesseeee......the car is making a noise & exhibiting a symptom for something on which a TSB exists and they are telling you now the problem is because of abuse??

That is a load of hooey. There is NO WAY for any mechanic to inspect a clutch and/or flywheel assembly that is intact -meaning, no missing/broken rivets, broken fingers (which yours does not have, at least from your pics) and tell you it was damaged because of abuse. The bending and/or warping could have well been caused by the inconsistent engagement/vibration that was causing the howl to begin with -and who the hell can prove otherwise??

I would simply call Nissan Customer Service and flat-out make it a big issue.....this is simply not kosher. If no TSB existed, I say 'okay, your problem' but armed with a TSB for exactly the same symptom?? No way, Jose

i had this exact problem on my car about 1 year ago. i had ~28k on the car on its 2nd clutch since i had a new one put in at ~3k with my new tranny. my car was so bad i could put it into gear and let go of the clutch and the engine would rev but the car wouldnt move. had it towed.... nissan tried to blame me but we called nissan went through a bunch of drama threatened legal action since they could not prove anything and they gave in. replaced the flywheel, pressure plate, clutch plate and throwout bearing no charge about 2 weeks later. dont let them screw you. Oh they also said that there were burn marks on the flywheel which they tried to use as evidence that i was "racing". fight em.

will

Guys, Thanks very much for the support, I have taken your advice and have contacted Nissan North America. I spoke at length with a customer service rep. about my situation. They gave me a file number and seemed willing to help me out. I was not asking for miracles, just some assistance. I hope they are in the holiday spirit.

Thanks again.

Does the PP have any "blue" coloration on it? If not, then it didn't get very hot. So it could be more of a faulty oem parts thing vs "user abuse"

I will have to check again (parts still at service) but I thought the marks were black on the PP.

I was going to say the same thing...the flywheel is very thick and will only warp or bend if it gets extremely hot, hence there will be heat marks all over it...

it definitely sounds like a factory defect to me...cuz looking at the pictures even though the warpage isnt visible the flywheel wear doesnt look out of the ordinary
