Dealer wants my car -- say what??
Dealer wants my car -- say what??
So I got this interesting letter from my local dealer today. It says:
Please review the following information carefully:
XXXXXX Nissan in XXXXXX, California, is offering a special market pricing and financing event. Your status as a XXXXXX customer qualifies you for this special event.
We need to acquire several pre-owned Nissan Maximas by December 13th, 2003, in order to fulfill special manufacturers requests. You have been identified as an owner of one of these vehicles and our new car managers have been authorized to buy back your current vehicle.
We would like you to trade-in your current vehicle for any new 2003 or 2004 Nissan Model vehicle. With factory incentives at all time bests and high trade-in values, we feel confident that with your approved credit you can make this transaction with little or no money down and with a monthly payment that fits your budget.
XXXX, bring this letter for admittance to this event and present it to an authorized Nissan representative at XXXXXX Nissan.
Please stop by or call us at XXX-XXX-XXXX to schedule a convenient appointment and allow us the opportunity to make you an offer. A visual inspection of your vehicle is required to offer you the highest possible price.
Due to your ownership status, this event will not be advertised to the general public. This will be your only notification.
.......
Then there are dates/times to show up and the dealer address and contact information.
Does this sound like a scam to get me car-buying? I've been told this sort of thing legitimately happens but the letter also came as a bulk mailer.

Its just the dealer trying to drum up business. You're not going to get anything more than if you wanted to trade in without their "special market pricing and financing event". I get probably one of these a week from dealers here in Houston-more from Ford and GM, but also from all the Japanese dealers.
halcyon,
They pay marketing guys big money to try and hit your hot buttons.
Usually I throw these into the garbage. They want you to come in so they can hammer home a sale. But I got one last May that offered early lease release (my 01 I had leased) if I would go for an 03. Same all time best incentive stuff. But then I thought, this is exactly what I want to do anyway. I wanted to get an 03 and they were starting to dwindle down, and I couldnt (still cant) warm up to the 04. It worked out great, $2000 incentive, 3.9.
Check it out it may be fun. Just dont let em into your wallet unless that is what you want.

It's probably another way for them to make money, which is to make people trade in their cars with low resale value and put much higher price tags on them. But if you really want to upgrade from 01 to 03, for example, by all means, go work out the math before you go to the stealership.

We got one from a local dealer aswell. My Dad told me that if they could get us into a brand new fully loaded one for no more than $4000 cash then he would do it.... they declined. No biggy, we drove the car for over a year with out loosing any money on it for depreciation.
Hmm... sounds like these letters are common.
Strange thing, though, my folks have a same year Maxima (though GXE auto) they actually bought from this place (unlike me) and didn't get this "offer". Almost makes it seem like Nissan is looking for specific, limited models -- like stick shift SEs. Maybe they found out those spontaneously combust or something
Anyway, my car is paid off and I'm not ready to take another hit on my bank account. But I'll go check things out and see how badly they want to sell me a car
I'll keep you guys posted...

they could give two craps about your car and your trade value - they just want you to buy a new one from them. alot of dealerships use advertisements like this (and early lease buy-out offers) just to get you in and buy an new car. the only way to do that is to fluff how much they are going to give you for your trade - and come up with some lame "event"...just for you, of course!
because you are a "special" customer! yea right, anyone who breaths, can get credit, and can sign paperwork is a special customer to a dealership!!!

That's hilarious. I got the same kind of letter from Jeep when I had a Grand Cherokee. The letter said something about they need used car inventory of my type, and they would be able to get me a brand new car with payments at or below what I'm paying right now. About 45 minutes later I was leaving the dealership, after the salesman said to me "look, those letters are just to get people in the door, we really can't guarantee what they say".
Toss that letter in the garbage, that's where it belongs.

I agree...these letters are complete BS. I got one last year when the lease was almost up on my Grand Am. Only I was dumb enough to go in and talk to them...let's just say that's 1 hour of my life that I'll never get back. The "special deal" or whatever they were calling it was the same deal that I could have got by walking into any dealership on any given day. But the fancy flyer and careful wording got me in there.
I call this a "factory-authorized" Bull****! The dealer just wants repeat business and will go at lengths to have you spend $$. If you want to be kept up-to-date on all manufacturers specials, check out edmunds.com and carpoint.com.
I received one from my local dealer yesterday in the mail, if I could get a new '04 Max for the same lease payment, no extra money down, that would be great.
I am going to drop by the dealer today to find out more.
Not very hopefully after reading the above comments
