Symptoms of a broken engine mount?

I have seen a few posts about people with broken engine mounts, but I would like to know what the symptoms of them are. I have a 5sp Y2k and when the tires should be spinning, the car is very jerky and makes a clunking noise. Could this be a broken engine mount?
Thanks for your help

That's a good question
I can almost never get my tires to squeal under dry road conditions... not even in 1st gear, but I CAN induce gobloads of repeated wheel hop.

Spirilis: It sounds like you are experiencing the exact same thing I am. I can hear the tires squeakk a little, but I mostly get wheel hop.

I did get to smoke my front tires the other day though... spinning on snow, snow turned into blacktop, wheels kept spinning... I laid off the throttle when I noticed some white smoking coming up from the front-end

tires dont have to spin to hear the noise of a broken engine mount. Shifting from P or N to R or D , may cause a broken engine mount to clunk. Also, shift in D or R , press firmly on the brake, and rev the engine a bit, and listen for the clunk noise.

Actually, it's really easy to see if you have a broken motor mount. All you need is a friend to help you out.

Start the car and open the hood.

Have your friend press on the gas pedal and hit 5K rpm.

If a mount is broken, the engine will literally look like it is trying to jump out of your engine bay. Whichever mount that's broken will be the area of the motor that "jumps" the highest...

And if your engine just torques a little to one side, it's not broken. You'll definitely know if it's broken when you step on the gas...

I too think my mounts are broken.!!!!!!! But which one, engine or the tranny.??????

The sound on my car is more a bump kind of sound and not a clunk. I only hear it when I spin the tires.!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is crazy.

Thanks for the good information. If one of the motor mounts is broken, are there replacements that are stronger, or will I have to buy an original part?
