Valve adjustment on VQ ?

Has anyone of you ever did valve adjustment on your VQ engine ? I often take my Max to redline and my engine is so much more noisy compared to my sis's Max. I'm just wondering if it's worth the $$$ to do the adjustment.

Well the only way to know for sure is to check the valve clearance. Need to remove the intake manifold and the valve covers to get to the the lifters. Then need a clearance tool to measure the valve clearance. Need to check if they are in spec, if they are, you dont need to do anything.

If they are not, then you need to get new shims according to how much the clearance is off.

Its not really a hard job besides removing the intake manifold and getting to the cams itself. But I really dont see the need for this unless you have the valves knocking really hard.

BigDog,
Is this a typical bucket and shim like many motorcycles?
I was assuming that these were hydraulic and self adjusting.

Its basically like a flat cylinder. They come in 64 different sizes. This is basically the surface the cam touches to move the valve down.

Thanks for the input BigDog. I guess I'll wait till I have more miles on the car before I do the valve adjustment.

I have 2003 Maxima SE VQ35DE motor 125K miles and only one exhaust valve is out of spec at 0.026" compared with partner 0.013" (in spec), cylinder #1. All others cylinders are in spec intake and exhaust. The valve train obviously TICKS at cylinder #1 to the song of the RPM's. Basically started mildly after I raced anther car off a light but not exceeding 60mph when car had about 70K miles. What I can't understand is A) how did this happen B) what could be the problem C) steps to further troubleshoot?
