Wimpy horn

I was wondering if anyone has replaced their horns on a 2003 Max, I find them very wimpy - Honda like. A friend of mine has a 2002 Altima, which has a much deeper/stronger sound to it.
Can I go to the Nissan dealer and buy the Altima horns and just swap them for my stock ones?

my bad bro...totally forgot....i did 2 cars with hella's yesterday. i have the install down to under an hour, if the wires were prepped, i can prolly do it in 15 minutes...we'll see what we can do for next weekend maybe...let's see how the weather turns out....

btw, removing the grill and the right headlight exposes everything so the job becomes a lot easier. ALOT. ask Spiddizzy and playero...i did their cars yesterday.

I installed FIAMM AM80S horns in my car last year. I bought them from NAPA for $29. They are part numbers 730-1054 and 730-1055. they sound many times better than the factory horns. Take a look at them on page two of my homepage.

install down under a hour! i assume you are using the relay then. i just took out my old ones and used the same wiring. all i really did was just run a ground wire for each horn and it works fine. took me about 20 min. does using the relay make it any louder or will it not make much of a difference. thanks

i have never heard it used w/out relay...i have heard stories of the horns blowing a fuse if pressed long enough (don't know what is "long enough") and then i've heard that rewiring it using the relay makes a nite and day difference.

If you use the original horn wires, the relay is already in the circuit. If you try to use horns w/o relays, the current draw will be extremely high and you would use a lot of battery everytime you blew the horn.

I've had mine for over a year now. I used the supplied relay, just to be on the safe side. Thanks again, Polo...your input and pics were very helpful when I installed them back then.

The best sounding, IMO, are the 350Z horns. Myself and Studman have had them on our maximas for some time now and they were a direct bolt-on. Makes your max sound like something alot bigger than it really is. Dave Burnette can get them to you for a good price. PM for more details...

I know the Hella Supertones are great, but I have enough wires going around in my engine bay as it is. So does anyone know if the Altima or 350z horns are plug and play on my 2k max? No mods of ANY kind needed?

Thanks

Don't wory about the relay that comes with the horn. You need to use the relay only if you want to hook up the Hella on top of your OEM horns because the fctory wiring can't handle the current load of 4 horns. Otherwise, it's a plug and play; you can just replace the stock horns with the Hellas.

Thanks for all the ideas, I just called the local Nissan dealer for pricing - I am going to try the Altima horns first they are $26/pair, compared to $167 for the 350Z's (all prices in CDN $)

I have the Supertones on my 2k2 and they are easy plug and play horns. I just used the stock wiring and ran 2 short ground wires for them. Very simple and not much wiring added.

I didnt use the supplied relay though.

Man, I'm gettin two air horns. I'm so sick of people pulling out in front of me and me nailing the horn and then they act like they don't even hear it. As as our horns sound either they don't hear them or they think it's some kid on a bike. I used to have an Eclipse turbo with the same problem. After the air horns I don't know how many heart attacks or wrecks I caused......probably too many.

Can you go hold down your horn for a while and see if any fuses blow?

Thanks

big air

I've got the Hella Twin AIR horns hooked up on my 02 Max. No need to use the relay, but I did give an extra 5 amps to the fuse (done this with 2 maxes, 2 mitsu's 1 bmw, and 1 honda). I think the Air horns sound better than the extra loud "beep beep" hella horns. Like Skalberti said, you will scare the crapola out of people and then will get the heck out of the way.

One downside to the air horns, you basically have to keep the door lock/unlock on silent operation. The pulse sent to the horn is not long enough to get enough air to the horns, so all you hear is a little compresser noise.

Go Air!

I have Hella Horns which I installed without the relay. I have laid into the horns for over 3 minutes while driving (some idiot was being obnoxious on the road). Anyways, my previous post on the Hella Horns: http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=217960. I have not had a need for the relay. . . and no blown fuses.

Horn Upgrades

After much soul searching and remembering how great it was having air horns on my Stanza; I went ahead and got air horns for my Max. After another near incident with a person who had their system up I went to Boat US and bought their loudest electric horn (124dB)
http://www.boatus-store.com/webapp/w...roductId=47246

I proceeded to ADD it to my air horns. God forbid if I ever drive in Florida and hit my horns I wll cause a thousand heart attacks amongst retirees.

I don't care for my 2K horn at all. Like you said, very "wimpy" sounding. I like my fiance's Civic horn better than mine. I liked my '89 Maxima's horn better, also. Heck, even my '85 Escort's horn was better than this one.

The 350Z horns from Courtesy are the same ones that DaveB can get. They are plug and play on all 5th gen cars. They aren't air-horns like the Hella horns, but they do sound like an American horn, not a wimpy Japanese horn. As far as price, I think they are around $60-70 for the set. Installation requires an 8mm wrench and 10 minutes maximum for both horns. No wiring is required to install them.

Yeah I got the 350Z horns from DaveB and holy cow. What a difference. It is a dirrect replacement and it looks like there is one extra connector but dont mess with it. It comes off when u are going to bolt on the new horn.
