GOt a little problem, plz help

Hey guys, well I own a 2000 Nissan Maxima GLE auto. Well lately, the car idle around 600-700 after it warms up. After all being warmed up, if I leave it in park or neutral, the car just stalls out (turns off). And if im at a red light perhaps, the car will idle around 650 then go down to near 500 then go back up, feels like the car is gonna turn off or something.

So could this be some sort of battery problem or something?

Please help, thanks

How long do you drive it before it happens?
Because in my old grand am that use to happen, and it was the overheating and would shut off. It was my torque converter getting locked in place when I went under 40 wouldn't come out of lock so I would check that.

It happens after it warms up. I would say even 3 mins of driving?

As long as the car is moving, it's fine. It just happens when im at a complete stop, the rpm just goes low and feels like the car is gonna shut down

I think it's the spark plug. When was the last time you changed them? My second advice is to clean the throttle body. Good luck.

I had this problem on my 2000 GXE right after I got it. Don't know how long you've owned yours but if it started to do it, then I don't know. But if this has always happened the dealer can fix it. Mine was when the 5th gen came out a few of them had the wrong computer programming. The dealer reflashed my computer and it fixed the problem, but mine did the same exact thing, got cold car would die, sometimes didn't even start when it was cold and I mean winter temps. Chris

Well I bought it used at my local nissan dealer in 2002. so only been 1 year. They did change most of the stuff, not too sure on the sparks, gotta go check my papers. I had it for 1 year, without many problems. Just got the starter fixed so dunno if that could have caused it. Well hope it's not too big of a deal, dont have $$, haha

Thanks

I use to have a non-Maxima that did this. It was a switch in the transmission that would not allow the car to downshift. Took it to the transmission place and it cost about 350 to fix and about a day.

The first thing I'd do is get a can of BG 44K injector cleaner. I had the same problem with a '90 SE and BG 44K cleared it up within a hundred miles or so. I see you're in EC. Norris Nissan (formerly Nissan West) sells it, but you'll pay for the convenience ($26 I believe).

Before it started dying in park or neutral, did it rev up and back down? If so, it could be a really dirty throttle body.

only when you are in complete stop or when you are just about coming to a stop your rpm drops low?

i think the problem was traced to either faulty MAF or burned O2 sensors.

I had a car that did this and it turned out to be the idle sensor

This happened to me on my previous car (not a Maxima). Turned out to be the O2 senor.

Hey,

I got my 02 sensor changed when my service engine soon came out couple months ago. basically when im driving, it's fine. Only time it happens is when im at a complet stop, for example at a red light. The idle will go little low then rev itself back up to 600-700.

My bro was driving it today, and he said he put it in Drive, started driving slow, around 10mph and the car just shut down on him. REstarted it and it was fine..

I am just trying to see what i can do right now cuz it's almost new years and dealers are closed or busy so gotta wait till next week to get it checked out.

So if it is the o2 sensor or throttle body, would the warrenty cover this? Also I dont know what else might be wrong but the service engine soon keeps coming up then goes away, then shows back up, wth is wrong with this car?

Thanks for ur help

Try the throttle body cleaner first. Extremely dirty throttle bodies tend to lower the idle, and could cause this situation. Thats the cheapest/easiest thing to try. If that doesn't fix it, try and see if you can get your idle bumped up a little bit. If the problem persists, I'd say go with MAF first. The MAF causes some of the most unusual symptoms that would lead you to believe that something else is wrong. After that, my guess would be the ignition coils. That's the order I would check things.

TK

PS. Damn, I missed the part that you said the SES was coming on and off. I'm betting it's the MAF then. It's like 75 bucks, and it's also nice to have an extra one lying around in case. I keep extra ignition coils and an MAF incase the car starts to act up. Just swap them out, and if problem persists, at least those factors can be eliminated.
