I had the same exact thing on my left side. Dealer actually
ordered me a new tail light under warranty. That was back in Novemeber
of 2002.

 

Yep go with the 00-01 tails. I had an armadillo in my right lens an didn't even know it till it started smelling. The good thing is that you never saw it from the outside. About people thinking that you have a slow 3.0, this will make your car a "sleeper" and then you can laugh at them when you pass them and they're looking at your bug free tail lights. IMO I've always liked the black ones.

 

when i used to clear 97-99 tails, i did around 30 sets and always found bugs inside them

you probably have a broken seal. Do you notice any condensation after washing your car? If so, then 99% chance that you have a seal broken.

Why don't you try removing the reverse light and stick the hose from a vacuum in/around there to suck it up? Might work....

 

Tried doing that. It won't work because the reverse light housing comes right up against the clear tail light housing with no gap for the vacuum to work. There is no condensdation at all so I can't see there being a crack. Maye if I took all the bulbs out and blew it out with some sort of blower?

 

Guess I should have looked at the picture more closely. There has to be some way to get in there or the bug(s) would not be using it as a graveyard....

 

You should really consider finding a way to get some resin in there as well. The dealers around here do this as a dealer-installed option, and call it the "prehistoric skeeter mod". It's quite valuable.

If you can get a dinosaur footprint on your rear deck lid, you're set.

 

Most likely the bugs got in there while being assembled in a fly/bug infested 3rd world country sweatshop.....

 

If you guys look at the back of the tailights you'll see a round whole, which is probably where the bugs are getting in.

When I painted my tails red from the back I had red paint dripping misteriously from somewhere and it was from that same whole.

 

It only adds to the sleeper status, I've surprised a few 2k1 and 2k2's with my car, they were probably thinking what the heck does he have in there?

Why don't you guys just pull out the bulb and put a shop vac it out. Is that part sealed.
