Got my trade!
Picked up my new FIVE-SPEED AE today!
As I posted a couple days ago, I thought this deal fell through. Turns out whatever deal they had going with someone else didn’t happen. Or they were BS-ing me… either way…
It’s the same color and mileage as my old auto AE, plus it has Bose and seat warmers.
Paid $600 after trade-in and refinanced my crappy balloon payment loan while I was at it.
I’ve only driven it about 5 miles and I’m already amazed at what a difference dumping the slushbox makes!
--This thing has cloth interior with seat warmers: This could only be Meridian Edition, right? Is there a better way to tell if I have meridian? Anyone?
$600 and a higher interest rate to re-finance all my negative equity. I had to bargain like a **** to get this deal- I think I made out pretty well!
I’ve loved my car since day one, but had two major regrets: Getting an auto and my Balloon Payment loan.
I got a 6-year loan with what used to be my extended warranty rolled into a down payment. It’s a higher rate, but since I won’t be paying on an 8-year-old car, I feel better about it.

Oh, I’m the MASTER of negative equity.
I was upside down on the Ford I had before my auto Max- that’s how I got myself into a balloon payment in the first place.
Now, I’m about 6K under w/ the depreciation from my max and the Ford. I’ll be holding on to this one for a while, though.
I was offered like $23.5 for my Auto AE (no bose, no leather, no meridian) and they wanted $24.8 for the 5 SPd.
Again, both cars have 7K miles exactly.
Instead of bumping down the price on the 5SPD, they bumped me up on the trade-in. So I wound up trading it in for $24.2 and paying $24.8 for the 5spd.
FYI, I paid 26.7 for the Auto brand new.

Find a used one w/ similar mileage and you should be able to do it. Think about it… same car, same mileage, same options, but you’re willing to pay XXX for a car with one less option. Make it a no-brainer for the dealer.
You have an SE? That’s a $500 option you’re willing to PAY to get rid of.
GXE? $1500.
Don’t forget, it’s almost always easier for a dealer to sell a car with auto than stick.
Give it a shot. And good luck!

Hey! Don't you claim the MASTER title. I've traded in my 99 Maxima for a 2000 and I'm already looking at a 2002. Congrats though. And I traded it numerous other cars prior to my Nissan days. I almost did the same thing as you did, trading an automatic for a 5 speed. I just couldn't pull the trigger though. They had a Majestic Blue AE with 5 speed waiting for me at the dealer. I almost did it, but then I kept thinking about getting my a$$ kicked by the 2002 3.5 SE-R Maxima. I test drove it for a couple of miles. I feel sorry for the person who bought the car.

Why feel sorry for the person that bought the car? It will still be an AE edtion, and the 02 will not. Plus an AE, loaded, and 5Spd is very very rare, and should keeps its price a little better. As far as 2002, no one knows exact facts yet, and maybe it will not be as great of an engine overall as the VQ 3.0? Only time will tell. There is more then HP.

OH, lol.
Anyhow, you must have lost more money then $600 due to Tax, Title and License? I don't know what the percent is in your state?
For example, I got such a good price very near invoice, that a year from now, even with 15,000 miles, retail value will still be slightly higher then what I paid for the car new. Now I couldn't say it was an even trade, as I paid about $3000 down to offset TTL. Then again, I guess you don't lose that much of that when you trade your car back in, as you don't pay tax on the amount equal to your trade.
This is only time I would recommend a trade in. All other times, sell private, if what you can get is more then what you save on taxes on your new car plus any equity you had in it.

Yes... exactly. The AE 5 speed is a great ride. That LSD was great. I liked it much better than my automagic. I drove it without a proper break-in though. I really put it through its paces. :")

How come you are not holding out for the 2002? If you don't you'll add the 2001 to your trade-in history.
