Clunking Noise in Rear of car??

Can anyone tell me what it is? When I drive the clunking happens when i go over some dips yet sometimes it doesnt clunk. It sounds like this *CLUNK CLUNK* yah i know.. not very detailed, but thats the best i can do. The sound is coming from my rear left hand side of the car. I thought it was a blown strut, but when my cousin pushed the trunk down he said it seemed fine and that the left side of the car wasnt sagging a little more than any other side. Could it be some loose part? Or do you guys think its a blown strut? I just dont want to buy aftermarktet struts if i dont have to since im in a tight budget with other things.. Would you guys recommend taking it somewhere to get looked at? and how much would that cost to get a checkup of what the problem is? (asking cuz i dont want to get ripped)

btw 2k1 max riding on progress springs for about half a yr now with stock struts and roads in cali are somewhat bumpy but not horrible.

Do you have a custom exhaust? Are you sure its not coming form the right rear?
I had a clunk prob, it was caused by my B-pipe smacking against the frame due to my center inlet muffler moving my b-pipe over far enough to let it clunk when hitting bumps at angles. Best way to check is to grab the b-pipe from some area behind the muffler and move it side to side and up and down to see if it hits anything.

Have you checked to see if your jack came loose in the trunk. I know one guy here had that problem sometime back and he found out his jack was flopping around. Check that.

That sounds like exactly the same symptoms when I had a blown strut on my 2k....I pushed down the car also and rebound was fine, but there was still the "clunk" even though the car seemed to ride fine. Turned out to be the strut......problem fixed.
