2001 AE Shift **** Chipping?

Hey guys and gals, I have a question on behalf of myself and a few of the Altimas.net members who have installed shift ***** from the AE max, and are experiencing chipping and other finish problems on the aluminum piece. I personnally had my first **** chip, and the second is bubbling up like plastic wrap. Very strange. I was wondering if any of you with 2001 AE 5-speeds have experienced these problems. The ***** we are using were purchased on ebay and came in a genuine Nissan parts box. Seems strange that at least 3 ***** now are having problems after less than 2 months. Thanks for any advice you may have.

These are the ***** by the way:

When I bought my AE (used), my shifter (auto) had chips. I scraped the rest of it off to reveal a nice chrome finish underneath....i would take a pic but its too cold to go outside...lol

mine began chipping rather quickly.....don't think I have many of the numbers left on it, and the silvery finish has worn though and it now showing the black molding under it. now i just pick at it while i drive.

I've had mine for over 6 months and it still looks new! No chipping or anything. I got mine from DaveB.

I don't know if they are genuine or not, but I would be a little skeptical considering how the seller lists the ***** as found on the Nissan Maxima 2000 Special Edition.

1) It's 2001, not 2000.
2) It's an anniversary edition, not special edition.

At $45 a piece, I would rather purchase mine at Courtesy Parts for $60 and get the piece of mind knowing I was buying the real deal.

Just my .02.

Tony

Bought my AE new. 48K miles and lots of shifting later still looks fine...but I did notice it almost looking cloudy about 2 years ago...took one of those plastic kitchen sponges (with the plastic net around the sponge) to see what the heck it was...not sure if just hand oils, etc. or what, but once cleaned it shines very nicely and has ever since.

Could you put a layer of clearcoat paint on it to protect from chipping/wear?

When you do this do you take the shift pattern off with it? I thought this might be the case, that it was plastic. It makes sense as mine looks like it has a bad shrink wrap job on it now.
