I am seriously thinking about doing a 5-spd conversion in my 2001 GLE, but i dont know much about how much this costs including tranny or where to get it done. can some of you who know about this or have had this done let me know some info on a 5-spd swap?

are you getting all new parts or used?

Y2KevSe and PcGuru2k have done it. Kev use all brand new parts and the 2k1 AE tranny itself is 1800 already IIRC. PcGuru got used tranny with new clutch....it was a lot cheaper but I dunno how much it is.

 

Ive got a 5sp that i might not mind swapping.

 

I swaped my auto tranny for a 2k1 AE LSD 5spd tranny a while ago. Cost around $2500 with all used parts installed. There used to be a parts list and write up at hlh0501.com but that site is gone i guess. Anyone know what happened to that? You can buy parts used on car-part.com or buy them new from DaveB. I got everything used from one wrecked AE I found except for a few little things i took off a 2k 5spd at a local yard. It was lucky to find everything in one place.

Here is the list of stuff you need:
5spd tranny (get vlsd if you can)
Both manual drive shafts
1 clutch kit (clutch disc, pressure plate, throw out bearing)
2 shifting rods (support rod + control rod)
Return spring (buy new)
1 5spd starter
1 shifter
1 shifter console piece
1 shift consul bracket
1 brake pedal
1 clutch pedal
1 master cylinder
Hydrolic lines for clutch
1 slave cylinder for clutch
1 extra set of tranny harnesses (might come with tranny..mine did)
18ga wire and wiretaps
Assorted cotter pin set
1 manual fly wheel
1 manual motor mount
Tranny fluid (get 5 bottles of Redline MT-90)
Locking pin and clip for the clutch pedal to the master cylinder
2 nuts that fit the treads on the clutch pedal
1 bolt that bolts in the top of the clutch pedal
1 bolt that connects the control rod to the tranny

You can find a normal 5spd tranny and most of the parts pretty easy if you call around for a while. I would try to find a tranny with VLSD. Try to find a max thats just been wreck and they havent taken apart yet. Or just buy the parts new...but that will be more expensive.
