I live in Memphis, Tennessee. Of course, the State reserves the right to deny all "inappropriate" requests. I requested SYONARA, or ADIOS, or GOODBYE. One week later, my check was returned in an envelope without any letter of explanation. I guess that means HELL NO! LOL! :-)

Your's didn't sound that bad... I had a friend's who was denied but his was:

3M TA3

Figure it out if you want, but at least he got a letter saying it was denied. Send it through again and make sure it wasn't just a mistake. Sometimes persistence will get you what you want, or maybe just a restraining order

Good luck.

Ah, can't wait,

says eat me in your rearview mirror...

It took the DMV about a month a half to figure this one out, before it was denied.

If you read them backwards i.e. in a rearview mirror they spell somthing. Kinda like what ambulances do on the front across the hood. Same principle.

3M TA3 (spells EAT ME)
3M 3TI8 (spells BITE ME)

Just another funny thing to try and see how observant those DMV people are. (Pretty observant from what I've seen though )

denial

Is the procedure the same when the choices are already in use? Do they just send the check back or do they tell you someone beat you to it?

I would guess they denied Goodbye and Adios because they're already taken. As for Syonara, they may be suspicious due to the spelling. Try spelling it like the movie (Sayonara).

3M TA3 and 3M 3ITB would look good on a windshield visor decal. People would be more likely to be looking at your windshield in their rear-view than your license plate. At least right before you blow them off the road with your max!

My guess is some bored bureaucrat, the novelty of whose position faded years ago, just takes one look, makes a snap decision, slaps the check in an envelope, and mails it back to you. I call it "first blood." Let the games begin...!

I would have been very content with SYONARA, but now I'm definitely going for 3M 3TI8! Wish me luck.

In NYS, you can go here, https://www.dmv.state.ny.us/inettran...hooseplate&WCU and check the plate that you want. Some funny ones are still there.

Denied?

I can't believe they turned down something so benign. Sheesh - I saw these on CA plates:

RX TION (on an RX-7)
ILV2B8 (I don't know what car it was on - I was too busy
ogling the ravishing blonde behind the wheel)

Go figure.
